While we make every effort to ensure the accuracy of our published materials, programs are typically advertised more than a year prior to their start date. As a result, some program activities, schedules, accommodations, personnel, and other logistics occasionally change due to local conditions or circumstances. Should a major change occur, we will make every effort to alert you. For less significant changes, we will update you during orientation. Thank you for your understanding.

Dinner:
Welcome dinner at the hotel.
Evening:
Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead. Prepare for check-out and transfer in the morning.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus with several steps up/down; driving about 56 miles, approximately 2 hours riding time. Walking and standing, approximately 1.5 hours; about 1 mile, mostly flat terrain.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We will be joined at the hotel by a local expert who will give us an overview of Costa Rica. After check out procedures, we’ll join our Group Leader in a walking field trip through downtown San José. Our half-mile walk from the hotel to the Central Market will take us past the Grand Hotel of Costa Rica, interesting shops, restaurants, and the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica (National Theater of Costa Rica). The imposing national theater was built during Costa Rica’s coffee boom in the late 1800s. We’ll take a moment to admire the architecture and discuss the historical significance of coffee production in the country, then continue our walk to the Central Market. Inside the market we’ll explore its passageways crowded with stalls selling everything from cut flowers and fresh produce, to medicinal herbs and small diner-style restaurants serving "comida typica." The bustling market was founded in 1880 and is an important cultural site of Costa Rica. Concluding our walk, we’ll board the bus at the Central Park and begin our transfer to Sarapiqui, in Costa Rica’s Caribbean lowlands.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant en route.
Afternoon:
We’ll continue our journey to Sarapiquí. This is one of the richest sites for birds in Middle America with more than 400 species recorded. The nearby La Selva Protection Zone and the Braulio Carrillo National Park form the only significant corridor of forest on the Caribbean slope linking the highlands with the lowlands — a corridor crucial to birds and animals that undertake seasonal altitudinal migrations. Arriving at the lodge, we’ll check-in with some time to freshen up. We’ll then regroup for a presentation by a local expert that will give us an introduction to the rainforest.
Dinner:
At the lodge.
Evening:
At leisure. You might like to spend time with new Road Scholar friends on the porch, enjoy a nightcap while relaxing to the sounds of the rainforest, or turn in for a good night’s rest before tomorrow’s activities.
Activity Note
Early morning (pre-breakfast) birding walk with Group Leader around lodge grounds. Getting on/off a bus, on/off a river raft. Rafting involves an upper body workout and the likelihood of getting wet; wear bathing suit and water shoes/sport sandals; apply sunscreen well before water activity. Class I & II rapids: easy/moderate conditions including waves, rocks, sand banks, and light riffles. River conditions monitored daily; activity can be cancelled/rescheduled if conditions aren’t optimal.
Breakfast:
At the lodge.
Morning:
We’ll join our Group Leader for some early morning birding on and around lodge grounds, then walk back to the lodge for breakfast. Our next field trip will commence with a short ride into the Sarapiquí community, where a local resident will invite us into her home, talk about their daily life and show us on how to prepare some typical Tico dishes. We’ll be accompanied by a member of the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center (SCLC), who will give us an overview of their mission and talk to us about their work together with the community. Founded by Giovanna Holbrook in the mid-1990s, the SCLC is a registered non-profit organization whose mission is to link communities and conservation through education and ecotourism in the Sarapiqui region. Programs include environmental education, ecotourism activities, English classes, an ecology club, community outreach, a women's group and many others. Note: Many participants in previous Road Scholar programs have brought a few basic school supplies such as pencils, erasers, pens, colored markers, children’s books in Spanish, etc., to donate during the visit. This is completely voluntary and is not required. Concluding our activities we'll return to the lodge.
Lunch:
At the lodge.
Afternoon:
We’ll have some “down” time before our next activity. This is a good opportunity to enjoy a walk around the lodge grounds, cool off in the pool or perhaps practice your photography skills. Next, we’ll board the bus and drive to a nearby drop-off site along the shores of the Sarapiquí River in preparation for our rafting field trip. A rafting expert will conduct a safety orientation and go over rafting procedures and equipment before giving us the go-ahead to don our gear and board the rafts. A rafting expert will sit at the back of each boat and navigate, and we’ll help by paddling at various stretches along the river. At the end of the field trip, we’ll take the bus back to the lodge and change into dry clothes. Before dinner we’ll enjoy some Latin dance! We'll have some lessons with local people to learn three styles of Latin dance: Merengue, Salsa, and Cumbia. The dancers will demonstrate the different styles, then lead us through the dances step by step. We’ll end the session dancing with partners.
Dinner:
At the lodge.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare for check-out and transfer in the morning.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about 61 miles, 2.5 to 3 hours riding time including stops. Getting on/off a motorized riverboat with covered top and open sides; no restroom on board, riding about 1 hour. Descend/ascend 3 flights of stairs with handrail to/from boat dock.
Breakfast:
At the lodge.
Morning:
After checking out of the hotel, we’ll ride to the Puerto Viejo dock and board a river boat that will take us on a study cruise along the Sarapiquí River. The boat captain and our Group Leader will put their expert spotting skills to use by pointing out riverine wildlife along the way. Some of the animals we might see include caimans, turtles, iguanas, bats, monkeys, sloths, kingfishers, and Anhinga water birds. After disembarkation, we’ll get on our bus and ride to a local plantation to learn about some of the environmental and economic impacts of agriculture in Costa Rica. A farm representative will lead us through various sections of the plantation and explain how the crops are grown and processed for shipping. We’ll reboard the bus and be on our way to Arenal, once Costa Rica’s most active volcano. It has been a main draw to the town of La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano National Park.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant en route.
Afternoon:
Once at the hotel, we’ll check in with some time to freshen up and relax. We’ll reconvene before dinner for an expert-led presentation on the forces of nature and how they help shape life here.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
Time at leisure.
Activity Note
Walking on forest trails and hanging bridges. Comfortable clothing, closed walking shoes, and binoculars suggested for this activity.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
For our next field trip, we’ll drive to Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges and explore some of its many trails and scenic bridges. The private nature reserve has more than 600 acres of tropical rainforest that can be explored through a network of trails, hanging bridges and standing bridges. We’ll then return to the hotel.
Lunch:
At the hotel.
Afternoon:
We’ll board a bus and drive to a local farm to learn about its history and some of the agricultural traditions in this fertile region. Although tourism surpassed agriculture as the main source of revenue in the area, many local plantations still produce important amounts of papaya, sugar cane, tapioca, and ornamental plants. At the farm, we’ll work-up an appetite while learning to make tortillas and cooking them on a traditional wood stove. We’ll also enjoy a presentation by a local dance group, that will perform folkloric dances wearing traditional costumes.
Dinner:
At the farm, we’ll have a traditional dinner hosted by the family.
Evening:
Returning to the hotel, the remainder of the evening is at leisure. Prepare for check out and transfer in the morning.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about 21 miles, approximately 1.5 to 2 hours riding time with stops. Boat ride across Arenal Lake approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Bus will travel separately with luggage. Pack any needed items in daypack.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
The bus will carry our luggage to the next hotel. Take what you need in a day pack as we won’t have access to our luggage until late afternoon at Monteverde. After checking out, we’ll drive to a local boat dock on the shores of Arenal Lake. A small covered boat will ferry us across the scenic lake. Upon reaching the other shore, we’ll board a bus and ride uphill along scenic back roads to Monteverde.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
We'll then ride to a local coffee plantation. During our field trip, we’ll learn about the harvesting and processing of coffee as well as the history of this crop from its beginning in the Arabic countries and Ethiopia. We’ll also gain insights into the importance of the golden bean — grano de oro — and its impact on Costa Rica’s social, cultural, and economic development. Moving on to the hotel, we’ll check in with some time to freshen up. Next, we'll learn about the history of Monteverde's Quaker community during a home visit with a longtime resident. In 1951 a group of American Quakers, fearful of their nation’s growing militarism, fled the United States. The Quakers found Costa Rica, a country without a military, to be the most inviting option for their pacifist beliefs. This group settled Monteverde and intended to transform the area into profitable farmland. The Quakers developed a fairly successful cheese industry but they also recognized the delicate nature of the land and helped establish the area's first wildlife sanctuary.
Dinner:
At a local home.
Evening:
At leisure.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about 3 miles. Walking up to 3 miles; forest trails and irregular terrain; potentially muddy conditions. Wear closed toe/heel walking shoes with lug soles and consider bringing a lightweight rain poncho.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We'll board the bus and ride to a cloud forest reserve at Monteverde for an expert led exploration. While walking on forest trails, we’ll learn about the characteristics of a cloud forest and stop along the way to study its flora and fauna. The edges of this rich forest system, often cloaked in clouds and blowing mist, are home to more than 350 avian species and a myriad of other creatures and critters. The Monteverde area is perhaps most famous for breeding Resplendent Quetzals, Three-wattled Bellbirds, and Bare-necked Umbrellabirds. While these charismatic species can be elusive, a host of other cloud forest birds and amphibians are found in the area.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
Next, we’ll ride to the Bat Jungle, an educational space designed and managed by noted U.S. bat biologist Dr. Richard LaVal. Informative displays help to explain about bat biology, bat diversity, and their crucial role in nature as pollinators. The Bat Jungle also has more than 90 bats, representing 8 different species, housed in a recreated nighttime cloud forest environment. Glass windows give visitors the rare opportunity to look inside the forest enclosure and observe bats feeding, flying, and socializing. Special microphones capture the high pitched bat vocalizations and broadcast them through loudspeakers in the bat viewing area. We’ll ride to the hotel in the late afternoon with a bit of downtime to freshen up and relax. Before our lecture, there will be an opportunity to watch the sunset! We’ll regroup for a presentation by a local expert on climate change and conservation conservation and development of the Monteverde area.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare for check out and transfer tomorrow.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; driving about 90 miles to San José, approximately 3.5 hours riding time.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We’ll take a field trip to the Monteverde Butterfly Garden and Arthropod Education Center. Jim Wolfe and his wife, Marta Iris, opened the Monteverde Butterfly Garden in 1989. The couple devoted themselves to hand-raising butterflies and gaining more knowledge of their preferences and habits. These fragile creatures require extreme care as they develop and grow. Every species feeds on a different variety of plants. Unlike most butterfly gardens, which buy their butterflies as chrysalids, all the butterflies we will see here were bred and raised on the premises. Though no longer managing the project, Jim and Marta’s dream lives on in the hands of a new generation of dedicated naturalists. We’ll begin our transfer to San José after the field trip.
Lunch:
En route.
Afternoon:
Arriving in San José, we’ll check in to our hotel with time to freshen up and relax before dinner.
Dinner:
At the hotel. Share favorite experiences with new Road Scholar friends during our farewell dinner.
Evening:
At leisure. Enjoy our last evening together in Costa Rica, then prepare for check out and departure in the morning.
Activity Note
Hotel check out by 11:00 a.m. See your program’s "Getting There" details regarding transfers.
Breakfast:
At the hotel (dependent on flight schedules). This concludes our program.
Morning:
If you are returning home, safe travels. If you are staying on independently, have a wonderful time. The Road Scholar "A Taste of Costa Rica" program greatly exceeded my wife's and my expectations. We had a superb guide in Erick Guzman, a native Costa Rican, whose warm personality, sense of humor, ability to easily communicate in English, and leadership skills were excellent. But it was his knowledge of the biodiversity of Costa Rica, as well as his amazing ability to spot wildlife that we on the tour would never have seen ourselves, that really shined. Without his keen eye, and his trusty spotting scope, we would not have seen or been able to photograph many of the birds and other wildlife that we did. Erick, and the program itinerary, made this program truly memorable. The rainforest walks were perhaps the highlights of the tour for me, but I was impressed with the numerous lectures and visits that introduced tour participants to the history, geology, flora, fauna, rainforest ecology, and sustainable agricultural practices of Costa Rica. Finally, I would be remiss without mentioning the opportunity to meet local Costa Ricans and learn about their culture. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting an introduction to Costa Rica.

The Taste of Costa Rica program was outstanding. The tour guide excellent, accommodations embedded in the rain forests were comfortable and clean, and the food excellent. The pace of the educational lectures and field trips to nature and people's homes were robust, though the physical demands less strenuous than I had anticipated. I could not be higher in my recommendation.

Road Scholar offers a great small group travel experience and opportunity to learn about new places and make new friends. I traveled alone and enjoyed the rafting trip, the sugar cane, pineapple, and coffee plantation tours were also fun! Tour guide was informational. Hearing devices were easy to use and great when we were on walking tours. Itinerary is accurate and well detailed to read on the website before the trip. I had to change my date for my first trip and there was no penalty to move or change my deposit to another date and trip. I recommend they change the policy and expand on the number of airline choices-- they are too limited in choices (RT) and the times selected are not convenient.

He navigated challenging roads and traffic conditions very well so that our group always felt comfortable. Our lecturers were passionate and shared their knowledge and personal experiences with us, which made learning and enjoying their lecture fun and easy. The food and places we ate were all wonderful with plenty of food for all and variety including many local dishes which added to the experience. This program was amazing as it immersed us into the nature, culture, and conservation efforts of Costa Rica. Our group leader, Andres, was outstanding and kept everything running smoothly. All my fellow participants were fantastic to talk with and were from a wide variety of backgrounds. We explored nature habitats by hiking at the Cloud Forest Reserve (dozens of monkeys were swinging overhead!), visiting the Butterfly Garden, rafting, and going on a couple of boat trips. We learned about the culture through dancing, visiting 3 local homes, and exploring a pineapple plantation. My favorite expert lectures were on climate change and the steps Costa Rica has taken; the Quaker influence in Monteverde; and an overview of important events in Costa Rica. We experienced wonderful food at restaurants and at local homes. The accommodations were extremely comfortable. Thanks, Road Scholar, for enriching our lives!

This was such a fun trip. We had great guides. We saw amazing animals, such as toucans, sloth, iguanas, river otter, crocodile, howler monkeys, bats, and more. We had a great variety of experiences in the rain forest, cloud forest, and central valley. For our late January trip, I would have preferred a more versatile rain jacket over a rain poncho (although I would still take a lightweight emergency rain poncho). I also didn't need a neck fan or cooling towel. You'll have a great time!

This learning adventure took me out of my comfort zone, straight into the beating heart of Costa Rica. If you're looking for an immersive experience from the Caribbean to the Pacific that at times leaves you wondering if you've entered Paradise, then imagine this — Waking each morning to a symphony of unique birdsong and the sweet smell of exotic flowers deep inside a lush rainforest. Standing in awe at the base of a massive volcano as its steam heats the waters below it. Walking across hanging bridges above the jungle's tree canopy. Ascending thousands of feet into the mountains to meander through a cloud forest. Tasting the most exquisite pineapple picked straight from a farm and eaten right there in the grove. Being invited into the homes of local families for a meal and meeting their precious children. Drinking cup after cup of arguably the best coffee in the world. Rafting down a river as howler monkeys serenade you. Crossing the continental divide to witness a stunning sunset over the Nicoya Peninsula. Learning new and exciting details about microclimates, wildlife from bats to butterflies, conservation and sustainability efforts and the history of generations who have worked the land. All while sharing this journey with fellow travelers-turned-friends in the trustworthy hands of a Group Leader who truly adores sharing his country with visitors. This program was a true 'taste' of Costa Rica for all five senses. We danced, we laughed, we learned, we grew. And through it all, we discovered and came to embody the true meaning of Pura Vida! — Lizzie G., Boston, 5 stars!

"A Taste of Costa Rica" was an excellent learning adventure. I went at the end of the rainy season and before the peak tourist season. Yes, we did get a few drippy mornings/afternoons, but the advantage of having no crowds made it worthwhile. For example, on the river rafting excursion the only rafters were from Road Scholar and on the river boat ride, there were no other boats on the water. My favorite lodging and part of the trip was the Seva Verde Lodge in the Sarapiqui Region. The lodge had a suspension bridge over the Sarapiqui River, a jungle hiking trail and a spot to drink coffee in the morning while watching exotic birds feed on fresh fruit. At night I went to sleep to the sound of the Howler Monkeys. Our guide and group leader, WIlliam Suarez, did an outstanding job of making sure we got the most out of the trip. He taught us about the politics, the customs and the people of Costa Rica as only a native Costa Rican could do. He made sure everyone, and everything was looked after and has an incredible attention to the details that made the trip special. I was ready for mosquitos and other bugs, but the trip was surprisingly free of biting insects. Sunblock was helpful as well as a light rain repellent jacket for the light showers and mist. There was fresh fruit and fruit juice at most every meal and the freshness and taste of these compared to what we have at home was amazing. The plants, the wildlife and the feeling of standing on the floor of a rainforest are truly worth the trip and something I will never forget.

The trip was wonderful. The country was beautiful, the hotels were comfortable, the events planned were interesting and informative and the people who lectured were knowledgeable. I learned much more than I had expected about Costa Rica. But the trip was made extra special by our guide, Reimer, who was a wonderful source of information, humor and caring throughout the trip. He was always generous with his knowledge and solicitous to tour participants as well as those Costa Ricans who participated in the events. His love for his country and desire to show it and its people to us were evident throughout the trip. Reimer was by far the best guide I've ever had on tours that I've taken and he delivered the best impression of Road Scholar tours. In addition, our bus driver, Luis, not only delivered us safely to all of the places but also shared in the humor and was generous with information on Costa Rica. Reimer and Luis together "put the icing on the cake" for me. I enjoyed every bit of the trip. Thank you to Road Scholar, Reimer and Luis. Noreen

Fantastic tour that allows you to learn not only about the fascinating rainforest flora and fauna (and to actually see them! this participant who has trouble seeing birds and animals in foliage actually saw toucans, monkeys, sloths, very tiny poison frogs, and numerous other tropical creatures), but to begin to grasp the very interesting history of Costa Rica, a country that consistently scores high on the world happiness index and that has, despite the history of civil wars in Central America, a stable government and a significant middle class population. You'll also learn about volcanoes and the process of growing pineapples, processing sugar cane, and cultivating, harvesting, and roasting some of the world's best coffee.

EXCELLENT well led trip by Erik!!Rainforest, beautiful birds, monkeys, iguanas & more..people lovely, culture interesting.. GREAT accomodations in wonderful nature settings.. Erik saw to it that we experienced a taste of CR to the fullest!! I thoroughly enjoyed CR and most especially the nature walks through the beautiful rainforest and hanging bridges, & perserve! Could spend wks there!! It is helpful to read up on socialistic Costa Rica before hand..it is a beautiful country, with government emphasis & $$$ spent on environnmental concerns, conservation, renewable energy, and YET incongruently, the environment in San Jose streets & countryside is littered, and in disrepair...crumbling infastructure with challenging rds and sidewalks....some sewage issues..like no TP flushing... Just like any trip, it helps to know what to expect, so one can better enjoy and appreciate the country.. I would rate this trip as a 5 star!!

As we look back on our trip to Costa Rica, it brings warm memories of a great experience. The speakers were excellent, the travel was well planned and accomodations were great. Our guide was very knowledgeable and exhibited a great sense of humor. His English was impeccable and his vocabulary was extensive. The food was abundant and choices were varied and fitting. We especially enjoyed the cultural immersion and the ecological sensitivity. Our driver was alert and safety conscious, sensitive to our every need. We liked the group size and the pace of each day. Plans were clearly communicated and we were well prepared for each activity. I would recommend this tour to any and all persons.

This was my first Road Scholar program. I was nervous about traveling with unknown people but had a wonderful experience that exceeded all expectations. I made friends and fell in love with our world and all it’s bio diversity, rich cultures and histories just by visiting one small country. I’m excited to learn through personal contact more about this wonderful blue dot we live on.

My first Road Scholar, and my first group trip - and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I was *very* nervous about taking this leap, and Road Scholar simultaneously kept me comfortable with a great leader and let me step outside my comfort zone and do things I'd never do on my own. Can't wait for my next adventure!

We were so fortunate to have Glorianna Sanchez as our guide. She imbued her love of country at every turn. The trip was fabulous. We were immersed in nature constantly. The Costa Rican people are lovely and so willing to share their stories with us. I would highly recommend this trip and don't forget your rain gear!

A thoroughly enjoyable trip in what has to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Guide Cristian Gamboa made everything flow smoothly, impressed us with his knowledge of Costa Rican history, politics, birds, and fauna and flora in general -- and could not have been a more pleasant travel companion. Although I enjoyed the more "classic" Costa Rican experiences, white water rafting, forest walks, etc., what made the trip special was the encounters with "real" people -- lunch with a family in a middle class suburb of San José, a visit with "Hazel" in a typically rural home in Sarapiquí, where we learned to make arepas and queso fresco, the school children who danced for us and showed us their classrooms in La Fortuna, and the evening with Marvin Rockwell, at 97 the last surviving member of the group of Quakers that founded Monteverde. These are moments beyond the normal tourist experience that leave one with at least a glimmer of insight into the culture and life of Costa Rica. It was a delicious "taste" of Costa Rica.

This was my first time going to Central American and after "A Taste of Costa Rica", I'm sure it won't be my last. We had an outstanding guide in Gilbert which helped make the program sparkle. We not only learned a great deal about the animal and plant life but the geology of the area. Gilbert also was wonderful in having us engage with the people of Costa Rica so that we gained a great deal of knowledge about the countries people. I particularly enjoyed the school trip with the children who were so delightful. It was a wonderful opportunity. If you'd like to get a better view of our groups experience, I wrote a blog about our experience https://marcnobletrips.blog/explore/costa-rica-is-pura-vida/.

This was my third RS program and trying to pick my favorite would be like trying to pick my favorite child. The one thing consistent through each program, however, has been the group leader. ALL have been excellent, caring, professional and knowledgeable, and each in his/her own way has made the trip special for me. That being said, the "Taste of Costa Rica" is so aptly named. It has a lot packed into a few days and leaves one "hungry" for more. The speakers in this program were truly outstanding, brilliant and even entertaining! Just the right amount of physical activity and good hearty food rounded out this "taste". I highly recommend it.

The value-added aspect of learning about Costa Rica's eco-system can not be too greatly praised. Road Scholar did an excellent job putting together a bird's eye view of the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. Our fellow participants were well-educated and well-intentioned people. Our guide and 24/7 trouble-shooter, William Suaraz, was diligent, very kind, and had a large body of knowledge. Recommend visiting Costa Rica asap as certain lovely aspects of the environment are disappearing due to climate change. Thumbs up!

The program exceeded my expectations. Our group leader Katherine was fabulous. The group itself was extraordinary—whether it is the quality of people who are attracted to the Road Scholar model, I don't know as it was my first RS trip. It won't be my last. From white water rafting to eating the most exquisite organic pineapple on the earth, to learning latin dance, to visiting the 97 year old Quaker pioneer, each experience added up to a beautiful week filled with amazing wildlife, birds that defy description in their color and majesty. . . . . It was one of the best trips I have ever taken. That's really all I need to say.

We absolutely loved our Taste of Costa Rica trip. This was our first Road Scholar adventure, and we really didn't know what to expect. We had heard good reports from people we knew, so we were hoping the trip lived up to our expectations. In all categories, it exceeded our expectations . Costa Rica is an exceptionally beautiful country. Our group of 13 people were a very good compatible group. But what made our trip outstanding was our wonderful guide, Roger Melendez Pereira, and our "guide in training", Fabian. Roger was passionate about all things Costa Rican, and this passion was infectious to our group. He went out of his way to show and point out to us so many little things that could have been passed over. He was always looking for ways to help us and guide us in our quest to see his country from his passionate view whether it be animals, plants, people , or food. He did it all with a great sense of humor, patience, and knowledge. Fabian was also a lovely part of the trip. Both went out of their way to make this trip for all of us memorable. The lectures we had were interesting and informative, and aptly set up the upcoming day's trip. Our accommodations were all good. In conclusion, I highly recommend A Taste of Costa Rica.

I submitted my automated review yesterday, but since then had a few thoughts. I would appreciate acknowledgement that you received this. 1. In San Jose, I arrived early and went to the Jade museum which also includes extensive ceramics, dioramas, etc. (The National Museum was closed Monday) I thought the Jade museum was better than the Gold Museum we went to as a group at the start of the tour. Our tour leader has never been to the Jade and perhaps some of the tour planners have not. Suggest that be substituted. That building and the exhibits are new and riveting. FYI their gift shop is rudimentary. 2. It felt odd not to be on the coast at all. En route back from Monteverde, there was a brief view of the Pacific. I would have enjoyed a brief stop there...maybe late lunch or just a leg stretch and brief walk on the sand? (not swim etc). It would have added something important for me, personally. Some people on the trip had never seen the Pacific Ocean at all and it might have been important for them as well to dip their toes in. I may write again.

Well worth doing this fascinating trip; you learn a lot about the plants and animals and the people of a good part of central Costa Rica and really come to appreciated the complexity of nature and its fragility and, thus, the critical importance of conservation efforts. High quality lectures and excursions add to the pleasure plus great food and sun (but not too hot). I really learned a lot about a stable country in an unstable region, and one which that has among the most diverse flora and fauna in the world.
