Activity Note
Lodge check-in available from 3:00 p.m. Remember to bring your nametag (sent previously).
Afternoon:
Due to the remote location of this program, a scheduled complimentary shuttle is available from the airport in Burlington, VT, departing promptly at 3:30 p.m. Check-in time is 3:00-5:00 p.m. for those arriving independently. All levels of cyclists are welcome. Meet your hosts and fellow cyclists in the commodious Great Room with its fireplace and extensive library that provides a casual and comfortable spot for refreshments and lively conversation.
Dinner:
At the Lodge in the open format kitchen and dining room. Enjoy high-end homestyle cooking with menus designed and prepared by our team of chefs. Bring your own alcoholic beverages if desired; alcohol is not served on site. In this age of fast cuisine, we think you’ll appreciate the effort that the dining team puts into their “from scratch” delicacies. Special dietary needs must be noted on the Participant Information Form. If you do not advise us of your requirements or special needs well in advance of your program, we may not be able to accommodate your requests once you arrive on the program.
Evening:
Orientation: 7:30 p.m. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. We'll cover riding technique and safety, and outline the ride choices (we choose from 20 ride options (choosing one for each day) ranging from fairly flat to fairly hilly). Afterwards, there will be a talk about Glen Sutton, the Eastern Townships and the general scene in this part of the world. Periods in the schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.
Activity Note
Daily rides average 25 miles; some do more, some do less. People cycle at their own pace in small groups and may do more mileage depending upon ability. Getting in/out of a van; transfers to the start of cycling routes are between 20-50 minutes depending on selected routes. Cycling routes, with modest inclines, are nearly completely paved, with some others on Rails-to-Trails conversions (crushed limestone).
Breakfast:
At the Lodge.
Morning:
We will gather on the porch for the Tour du Jour Map at 9:00 a.m. We’ll choose from 20 different day rides (we pick one of them for each riding day) and get underway at 9:15 a.m. People cycle at their own pace in small groups and may do different mileage depending upon ability. Sag wagon always on patrol. Rides are almost always on pavement (good shoulders, very low traffic densities) which often sees more bicycles than cars on any given day.
Lunch:
Bag lunches at a predesignated spot.
Afternoon:
We will continue the day’s cycling. There is some time throughout the day for museums, country stores, local swimming holes, milkshakes, antiquing, etc. We are normally back at the Lodge between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. where there is plenty of time for a swim, a snooze, or a snack.
Dinner:
At the Lodge.
Evening:
Evening lectures commence at 7:30 p.m. Topics might include Heart Healthy Living, Canadian History, American Invasions of Canada (1775 - 1871), Quebec Politics Since the Quiet Revolution, The Gerry Bull Story, Natural History, Native Canadian History, International Adventure Travel Tales.

The accommodations were great, and the food was exquisite. The educational programs were quite informative. The rides were more challenging/hilly on the Canadian side of the border.

Riding bikes in Quebec and Vermont is a wonderful experience, especially when the weather is cooperative. We had an amazing experience on this trip, especially since E-assist bikes were available. The guides repaired and replaced bikes when needed - even personal bikes that were brought by participants. The food at Glen Sutton Lodge is gourmet, including the desserts. I loved my time spent here and especially enjoyed the banter between our group and the cooks/servers Jo and Joy. They were so delightful. Thank you for everything.

This was a great trip and true set of adventures. Having a mixed group of seasoned bicyclists who didn't need e-bikes AND a slightly larger group of beginners (us) and those who chose e-bikes to help with the mountains made for some logistical challenges (for the guides). We didn't like being in the basement of an annex to the main house (as we'd applied to be in the main house early on) and don't know how those choices were made with room assignments. (This made the price/value for a vacation in a basement room questionable. That room should've been offered at a discount.) Food was delicious, plentiful and served with happiness; every meal was beyond our expectations. Having napkins or a few paper products for our on-the-road lunches would've been good and a few potato chips would've been nice. The lectures/singing were captivating and highly interesting; the naturalist with the animal documentary was riveting. Having a few group ice-breakers on the first night would've helped create more bonding within the group. Reviewing "rules-of-the-road" and emphasizing them with consistency would've helped with some of the riders passing on the left unannounced often or clumping up with the riders ahead of them. Special thanks for providing a padded seat (loaned) to my wife; she wouldn't have made it without it. And thank you, Vermont and Quebec for all the amazing natural beauty. We were lucky to experience it all. All in all, we had a wonderful, wonderful time and would do it again (with a different room).

Michael | Sonoma, CA
The program is outsourced to the staff at Outdoor Lodge, there are no Road Scholar employees. The support for the bicycles, lunch and snacks during the ride are inadequate. One of the riders was tall and the Lodge had to borrow a bicycle from a guide for him. After two days of riding, it was obvious that it wasn’t a good fit and with help from some attendees, another bike was configured for him. We all arrived on Sunday, yet, fitting for bikes wasn’t done until Monday morning. A number of the bikes has rust on their chains and attendees had to ask for lubricant. The Lodge didn’t seem to maintain the regular bikes and was more focused on the e-bikes as a solution. We were required to bring our own helmets and water bottles. The bikes did not have any attached bags to carry any items. Yet, in the morning, snacks for the riding day were set out with paper bags and we were expected to bring them along for the day. The lunch provided each day was a single sandwich for each rider. On one day a guide didn’t get a sandwich and another day, there was an exact number for each rider. Considering the length of each ride, having a full lunch along with snacks would be appropriate. Considering the title of the program begins with Bicycling:, the level of bicycles along with the lack of support for food during the ride was minimally acceptable.

Lovely lodge and surroundings. Steve and Jo were perfect hosts, cheerleaders, organizers. Felt spoiled by kitchen staff...meals were out of this world. The biking adventure was a little challenging but beautiful scenery and staff was sooo accommodating and helpful.

This Biking Adventure Trip was amazing. I was able to bike in a new, beautiful place with an e-bike that made the rides so much easier and allowed me to sightsee and enjoy the whole experience more. The hosts, kitchen staff, bike leaders/sweeps and sag wagon transportation really made me feel comfortable doing something I love in a different terrain, climate and country. The other participants were a highlight that I had not known to expect. They made the evening down time so enjoyable as we sat on the porch or in the living room area and discussed everyday trivia to trips we have done and life lessons learned. I hope that other Road Scholar trips can live up to my experience in The Outdoor Lodge in Glen Sutton, Quebec. Mahalo Nui Loa, Margie

If you like bicycling on country roads, you will enjoy this program. Stephen and Joy are wonderful hosts who provide great support for all levels of cyclists. Someone was posted at every turn and the sag wagons could rescue anyone who needed a ride to the top of a big hill. The food is incredible and healthy. The days were a good balance of cycling, time to relax and time to learn something new. Of course, it helped that Mother Nature chose to provide for warm, sunny weather and peak leaf season! Some of the hills were challenging even with an ebike, but I'm happy that I pushed myself to a new level! The kitchen staff and cycling guides did everything possible to make this an incredible experience.

Patti – Class of 2022 | Waltham, MA
A delightful program with intermediate biking on hilly terrain. The lodge is comfortable, and the lodge food and evening programs are great. However, upon registration of this trip in the Road Scholar computer program, I had no choice but to rent a bike. NO other option was provided. The computer program did not allow me to bring my own bike and NOT rent a bike. I brought my own bike on the trip, just in case, and I used my own bike and NOT a rental bike. The trip coordinator, Stephen, took the names of several individuals who were affected by this registration "glitch" with the hope that Road Scholar would be able to provide a refund. I have not heard from Road Scholar since the trip, so I am providing this review. I plan to contact Road Scholar by e-mail at contact@roadscholar as well to see if a refund for my bike rental NOT USED is possible.

Dear Patti, We are happy to hear you enjoyed your time with us in Quebec! We do apologize for any frustration the registration process may have caused you. We are currently in the process of adding an option for all future dates for those who do not need a bike rental and prefer to bring their own bike. We are glad we were able to connect with you directly and help get this resolved. Sincerely, Road Scholar
Elizabeth – Class of 2006 | Scottsville, NY
This was a very enjoyable and well-planned experience. I'm more aware of Quebec and New York/New England history. We had fun and stimulating conversations at the candlelit home-cooked dinners. The Inn is a welcome peaceful and restorative refuge (which I needed!) after the challenging steep curvy hills. Bike support couldn't have been better - a smiling staff member at almost every turn, leader at the front, and sweep behind.

This was a very good program that was well-organized with very nice accommodations, delicious and healthy food, and warm, friendly, helpful people. I'm glad that I rented an e-bike for the first time to be able to navigate the hills. Every riding day included crossing the border into VT and then again back into Canada. August is the wettest month so we didn't ride one day due to weather but were taken to see tourist sites in the area. The only downside was that it's quite a way to travel to from the Pacific NW which could include weather-related travel delays. (BTW, this was my 54th RS trip. I'm class of 2006. My records may eventually be corrected.)

It's a wonderful trip for experienced cyclists. Setting & scenery were fabulous, as were the group dinners in the lodge. Optional add-on loops can make the mileage on a couple of the day trips longer if so desired. I'm glad that I rented an e-bike which enabled me to better handle the hills.

This trip was well-organized, with all the logistical details expertly taken care of. The rides were all longer and more challenging than I expected, but I had greatly underestimated my abilities. The areas where we rode were beautiful, and the roads were safe. Everything about the program was fun.

I enjoyed everything about this trip. The countryside was beautiful and the e-bike rides were wonderful. The food was healthy and tasty and the table settings along with candles and fresh flowers were delightful. Stephen and Joy along with Shawn, Julie, Stephane, Lisa and Veronique were the most patient and kind people I have had the pleasure to meet. All during the trip we learned about the people and culture of Quebec. The lectures and music were well done and Insightful. This trip is a memory I shall not forget.

This was a fabulous trip and I loved every minute. I'm only a casual cyclist (usually going about 15 miles on a rail trail) but I was able to complete all the rides using an ebike.

This cycling trip was perfect. Gracious accommodations, great scenery, food, and leadership. I refer to it as a "cushy" bike ride because of the high level of support, but in fact the hills were challenging to this flatlander. The participants were interesting and friendly. The evening programs included Quebec music, local wildlife, and a program about a walk across France -- all educational and pleasant.

Great hosts and staff. The ride leaders really worked hard so everyone was well supported on the rides. Some beautiful countryside. A long downhill run of over 2 miles on smooth pavement was great fun. Food and accommodations were very nice.

Nancy – Class of 2018 | Springfield, VA
Well organized cycling trips through beautiful countryside. In addition to written directions, program staffers stood at each major turn and also cruised the length of the group to check in often with each rider. While we tended to spread out during the rides, the group did gather for lunch each day and at the ride's end. The food was excellent, and the lodge a cozy gathering place.

You will not find a nicer atmosphere, better food nor a more helpful staff than at The Lodge st Glen Sutton. Kudos!
