Day
2
First Day on the Court, Skill Separation into Groups
Location:
Glen Sutton, QC
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
Outdoor Lodge in Glen Sutton
Activity Note
One instructor/court. If an introductory week, the game will be explained, demonstrated and practiced. The basics of stroke mechanics, footwork and strategy will be drilled. Many games later, the obsessive nature of the planet’s fastest growing sport will be smilingly clear. Welcome to Pickleball checkers! If a more advanced week, the game’s subtleties will be explored: the third shot drop, spins, half volleys, overheads and resets. More pace, depth and placement! Welcome to Pickleball chess!
Breakfast:
At the Lodge.
Morning:
All racquet sports, from ping pong to tennis, require good footwork in order to improve. Pickleball is no different. Establishing that good foundation and incorporating structured swing efficiencies set the stage for rapid advancement. Details such as paddle grip, swing trajectories and target visualization, if introduced early, set the improvement curve quickly into motion. It's a morning for drills, chalkboard conceptualizations and sweat.
Lunch:
Bag lunches on the porch of the Lodge.
Afternoon:
Structured play! Instructors analyze points as casual games unfold. Patterned errors can be isolated and drilled into correction. Around 3:30 p.m., the Lodge porch calls, though some may wish to continue. There is plenty of time for a swim or a snooze.
Dinner:
At the Lodge.
Evening:
Evening lectures commence at 7:30 p.m. Topics might include Heart Healthy Living, Canadian History, American Invasions of Canada (1775 - 1871), Quebec Politics Since the Quiet Revolution, The Gerry Bull Story, Natural History, Native Canadian History, or a private musical concert.
Day
3
Another Day of Pickleball Boot Camp
Location:
Glen Sutton, QC
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
Outdoor Lodge in Glen Sutton
Activity Note
On the Lodge courts, the grinning and grinding continues. Movement patterns improve, errors diminish, shots become sharper and the focus is on targets: deep serves, deep returns, get to the net and discover the inner dinker that’ll open the door to your true Pickleball potential. Begin analyzing opponent weaknesses and how to target them depending on court geometry. Develop partner communication skills.
Breakfast:
At the Lodge.
Morning:
To the courts and to work! Small ratio instruction and on-court play (with analysis) will keep improvements coming. Most players send most shots to predictable targets (generally down the middle when tensions rise) so “pattern breaking” will be explored. Some local and similarly skilled players will be invited to mix it up with participants.
Lunch:
Bag lunches at the Lodge.
Afternoon:
Guided play continues.
Dinner:
At the Lodge.
Evening:
We will meet for our evening lecture at the Lodge.
Day

To Serve & Where to Serve
Location:
Glen Sutton, QC
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
Outdoor Lodge in Glen Sutton
Activity Note
More of the same with attention to the Serve. Fast serves start in the lower body and rely on the kinetic chain being released in a timely manner if they are to sting. Hitting spots (T, body or out wide) is won through long, guided practice. A loose body delivers accuracy and, if spin is added, can really confound opponents if mixed in randomly with more traditional deliveries.
Breakfast:
At the Lodge.
Morning:
More Pickleball.
Lunch:
Bag lunches at the Lodge.
Afternoon:
Round robin play or leisure time to explore the Sutton Township area.
Dinner:
At the Lodge.
Evening:
At leisure. Each week has one free evening where guests can sample our world-class movie collection, play bridge, or sample some local theatre.

We had the best time on this trip!
The accommodations, the food, the instruction and the evening festivities were fantastic. There was not one thing wrong with this trip!

Pickleball at Glen Ellis Lodge was fantastic! I significantly improved my playing ability and received coaching which ensured I stayed healthy during games. The food was tremendous, and the staff were thoughtful and kind. I would highly recommend this program and hope to return for the advanced course!
— Review left September 23, 2024
Wonderful program from the instructor to the accommodation to the amazing food. I highly recommend it. You will come out of the program with many more skills than when you started.
— Review left September 13, 2024
Superb main instructor and assistant instructors, along with Hosts at Sutton Glen Lodge, facilities at Glen Sutton Lodge, food was exquisite, the weather mostly great, and other participants were good. My partner and I are practicing what we learned there. Couldn't have been better!
— Review left July 8, 2024
The Lodge at Glen Sutton is a wonderful place to spend time playing pickleball. The food is delicious and the beds are comfortable. It was a magical time playing and better learning the game of pickleball.

Stephen and Joy have created a very inviting and relaxing lodging that caters to each person's needs. They are very personable and make each person feel appreciated and comfortable. I attended the Pickleball camp, but I know that people who come for other activities, whether it be hiking, bicycling, skiing or ballroom dancing (not me with my 2 left feet), receive the same treatment. Besides the amazing location, great trainers, particularly Venus for Pickleball, Joy's attention to dietary requirements of various guests and still providing amazing dishes is truly impressive. For only a group of 17 people, there were at least 4 different diet issues to address, Joy and her Sous Chef's, although I believe she considers them not so much subordinates but friends who are skilled chefs themselves. The nightly lectures and entertainment were varied and provided interesting details about Quebec and the French Canadian culture, in particular the Naturalist showing his videos of local animals including birds, bear, moose and river otters over a period of several years was great! I even purchased his book of photography with French captions, even though I can't speak or read French! The pictures convey their own story.
This is an experience that ranks high on my list of favorite trips, which also improved my Pickleball skills, at least according to some of the group I play with at home!
Thanks again to Stephen and Joy and highly recommend using their lodge for any activity.

This pickleball camp was a lot of fun. The coach was terrific and gave everyone a lot of feedback. The drills we did were very useful and I'm practicing them back at home. The lodge owners are very welcoming and the surroundings are very pleasant. Three awesome pickleball courts right on the premises. Very good food too all prepared fresh that day.
— Review left July 2, 2024
The Glen Sutton camp was our second pickleball in two years. The Glen Sutton experience stood out. We plan to return, probably with a next year return.
— Review left June 30, 2024
This was my wife’s and my seventh Road Scholar trip and was uniquely centered around pickleball. The training with Venus was exceptional. Her qualifications were evident, and she brought enthusiasm and energy to our sessions every day and evening. The venue was superb, our hosts were fantastic, and the food was very good.
While the photographer, historian, and musicians who presented in the evenings were all very good, most of our group, felt that the evenings should have been dedicated to pickleball-related activities. This could have included reviewing training videos with expert pointers from Venus, learning about the history and strategies of pickleball, and learning advanced techniques. I know Venus would have been excited to continue our ‘lessons’ well into the evenings.
Overall, this was a very good Road Scholar trip with a wonderful group of people. It was a whole lot of fun!
