Thank you for your understanding. We will be joined by a local expert for a presentation on the relationship between biodiversity and the Humboldt Current in Peru. We’ll then board a bus and ride south to Chorrillos. Through interactions with locals and a visit to the pier and fish market, we’ll learn about the way of life at this fishing community. Next, we will ride towards the ruins of Huaca Pucllana. Our Group Leader will provide historical information about the archaeological site while we enjoy views of the ruins from a nearby restaurant. The pre-Inca ceremonial center rises among the modern buildings of Lima’s attractive Miraflores district. The adobe complex is thought to have served as an administrative and religious center. Wari mummies and artifacts found at this location point to its occupation by Wari people around 700 CE.
Lunch:
At a restaurant overlooking the ruins of Huaca Pucllana.
Afternoon:
Riding on to downtown Lima, we will continue today's explorations and learn about the city’s colonial past. We will stop at the grand Plaza de Armas for a walking field trip to Casa Aliaga, Lima’s Cathedral, and the San Francisco Convent. At the conclusion of our field trip, the bus will drop us off at the hotel for a chance to freshen up and relax a bit before we leave our hotel for dinner.
Dinner:

Evening:
At leisure.
Activity Note

Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We will ride a short distance then set out on a walking field trip to a typical produce market. We’ll learn about the particular conditions that make this valley perfect for farming as we view some of the interesting vegetables and fruits grown here. The Sacred Valley was once an important agricultural center for the Inca Empire. In this part of the world, Inca terraces are as ubiquitous as potatoes, and many are still in use. Next, we’ll ride to the Moray archaeological site and explore it on foot. Researchers and archaeologists theorize that the Inca site at Moray was once used for agricultural studies and experiments. The unique terraces at this site are laid out in concentric circles within three large pits measuring as much as 100 feet in depth. We’ll ride on to the community of Maras, arriving in time for lunch.
Lunch:
In Maras with members of the local community.
Afternoon:
While at a local home, we'll learn about Inca agricultural practices during a presentation by a local expert. Then we'll walk through the community and learn about its salt pans, the process of mining salt, and cultural/historical ties to the practice. We’ll also learn how valuable salt was in the preservation of food, especially meats. These natural salt mines have existed since the time of the Inca and continued through that of the Spanish Conquistadors. We will continue our visit with the local community and see how they weave baskets from corn husks, learn about their farming techniques, and get a glimpse of daily life in the Sacred Valley. Our day will culminate with an ancient Pachamama ceremony led by a shaman. Pachamama is an important fertility goddess revered by the people of the Andes. She can be likened to the goddess “Mother Nature” in Western culture. We’ll then return to the hotel.
Dinner:
Early at the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare for check-out, transfer, and early morning journey to Machu Picchu in the morning. Pack an overnight bag (no more than 11 pounds) for this night; other luggage will be secured until our return to Cusco.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a bus; riding about 15 miles throughout the day, approximately 1/2 hour riding time. Train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes approximately 1.5 hours. Bus drive from Aguas Calientes town to Machu Picchu about 4 miles, approximately 1/2 hour; steep and winding road. Walking and standing at least 5 hours; dirt and grass terrain; many staircases; sloping, paved sidewalks in town. Wear or bring long-sleeved shirt for insect protection. Elevation 6,693 feet.
Breakfast:
Early at the hotel.
Morning:
We will ride to the Ollantaytambo train station and board a train to Aguas Calientes Station en route to Machu Picchu. This scenic journey by rail follows the meandering path of the Urubamba River and provides spectacular views of the snowcapped Andes. Our Group Leader will provide commentary as we go. We will disembark at Aguas Calientes Station (6,693 feet elevation). Shortly thereafter, we will board a bus that will take us up the mountain to the Machu Picchu ruins. NOTE: Seating on the buses is on a “first come, first served” basis. We do not have a set departure time and will wait in line to board the bus.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
We will spend the afternoon exploring in and around the ruins with our Group Leader. The modern day discovery of this ancient and incredible Inca city is credited to Hiram Bingham, a Yale graduate and former U.S. senator who was fascinated with Inca archaeology. While he was searching for Vilcabamba and Vitcos, Bingham “found” Machu Picchu with the help of a local farmer who knew about the ruins. Bingham hypothesized that the site was a “citadel” existing for strategic and defense purposes. He also speculated that the site was a refuge for Cusco’s Virgins of the Sun, based upon the finding of skulls there, although not scientifically classified as female. Breakthroughs in archaeology since 1985 have largely supported the emerging view of Machu Picchu as a royal estate. Archaeologists believe the site was built around 1450-1460 at the orders of Inca ruler Pachacutec Inca Yupanqui. It is estimated that the ruler lived here with more than 750 laborers, servants, family and relatives, and priests. Machu Picchu was built, flourished, and fell into demise within a period of only 100 years. The reason for its disuse remains a mystery, although archaeologists speculate it may have had to do with the Spanish conquest. We will ride back to Aguas Calientes for down time after our exploration.
Dinner:
On your own to have what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare for check out and transfer in the morning.
Activity Note
Getting on/off a train, riding approximately 1/5 hours. Getting on/off a bus, riding about 42 miles, approximately 2.5 hours riding time. Ollantayambo ruins steep; approximately 100 stone steps to top of fortress at altitude of 9,100 feet. Altitude at Chinchero approximately 12,000 ft. Walking about 1/2 mile; sloping, cobblestone paths; altitude makes walk more challenging.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
If interested in re-visiting Machu Picchu, it would require an extremely early visit in order to make it back in time to catch the train to Ollantaytambo. NOTE: Tickets for an additional entrance to the Machu Picchu ruins are not included in the program cost. We will rendezvous with our Group Leader at the hotel and walk to the train station as a group to board the train back to Ollantaytambo Station. Upon arrival, we will disembark and board a bus to the Ollantaytambo town and ruins — altitude 9,100 feet — for a walking field trip. We’ll learn about the engineering genius of the Inca that is evidenced by the extensive terracing and irrigation found at the site. Running water still flows through the town in aqueducts. The Inca emperor Pachacuti built Ollantaytambo in the 15th century as part of his royal estate. After Pachacuti’s death in the mid-15th century, the Spanish conquest of Peru began. The Inca emperor at that time was Manco Inca who used Ollantaytambo as a stronghold against the Spanish. His army won a small victory nearby against Spanish forces. Shortly thereafter, Manco Inca decided the site was not secure enough and fled with the remaining members of his empire to Vilcabamba, where the Inca famously made their last stand against the Spanish.
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
Next, we will ride to the small town of Chinchero — altitude 12,00 feet. We’ll set out on an expert-led field trip to a local weaving cooperative and observe a weaving demonstration. Weaving is a way of life in Chinchero, as important for preserving ancient traditions as it is for earning a livelihood. Located in the Peruvian Andes on the Inca road between Cusco and Machu Picchu, Chinchero was an early Inca center built by emperor Tupa Inca as his country estate. During Inca reign, textiles were woven and offered to mark special occasions, from peace treaties and sacrifices to marriage ceremonies and puberty rites. Children in Chinchero grow up watching their mothers work on the spindle and loom. By age six or seven, most have learned to weave. They begin with jakimas, narrow ribbons, before moving on to more complicated pieces. From here, we will ride to our hotel in Cusco.
Dinner:
On your own to have what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.
Evening:
At leisure.
Activity Note
Walking about 1.5 miles, approximately 2 hours; city walking, some cobblestones.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
We’ll join our Group Leader for a walking field trip through the city of Cusco including Koricancha. Cusco is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Western Hemisphere. It was once the heart of the Inca Empire and the center of their known world. Under Inca Pachacutec’s leadership, the city became a study in sophisticated urban development and engineering. Sadly, the site was thoroughly looted by Francisco Pizarro and his forces in 1533. The sturdy Inca foundations and stones were used to construct a new city. Koricancha, also spelled Qorikancha, is the Temple of the Sun in downtown Cusco; believed to have been an important religious center for the Inca. Colonial reports dating back to Cusco’s conquest indicate that it once held a gold statue of the sun weighing approximately two tons and inlaid with gems. The temple was built with enormous boulders and is one of the most outstanding examples of this type of construction. The invading Spaniards did their best to destroy it and replace it with a church, built on the solid foundations soon after the conquest. This symbolized the Christian triumph over heathen religion. Our next stop is to the Pre-Columbian Art Museum that features pre-Columbian art from the Nazca, Mochica, Chimu, and Inca cultures and more; societies who lived in Peru prior to European conquest. Pieces in the collection date from 1250 BCE to 1532 CE
Lunch:
At a local restaurant.
Afternoon:
We'll have some down time to freshen up and relax. We’ll regroup before dinner for a presentation by a local expert on the history of Incan and Andean musical instruments. We’ll then ride to a local restaurant.
Dinner:
At a local restaurant. Share favorite experiences with new Road Scholar friends during our farewell dinner.
Evening:
At leisure. Prepare for check-out and departure after our final field trip in the morning.
Activity Note
The hotel in Cusco will store our luggage after check-out and hold it until it is time for us to transfer to the airport. Walking about 1.5 miles, approximately 2 hours; city walking, some cobblestones. Getting on/off a bus; driving about 11 miles, approximately 2 hours riding time. Walking about 2 miles. Getting on/off a plane; approximately 1.5 hours flight time from Cusco to Lima. Book flights departing Lima after 11:00 p.m. NOTE: Weight limit for checked luggage 50 pounds.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
After checking out and storing our luggage at the hotel, we will ride to the impressive Sacsayhuaman ruins that form the head of the Puma design of old Cusco. The ruin is constructed of huge polygonal blocks that interlock with one another so precisely a knife blade cannot be inserted between them. It is an exceptionally impressive engineering feat as the stones used are not found in the region and most of the blocks weigh more than a ton. The largest weighs more than 300 tons. We will then explore two Incan ruins surrounding Cusco: Kenko and Tambomachay. Due to the lack of written records from the time period, the purpose of many Incan ruins is a mystery. Archaeological evidence at Kenko shows that the Inca built the site as a “huaca” or holy site, where researchers speculate that death rituals, mummification, and human sacrifice were practiced. Researchers believe priests used the channels carved into the site to determine whether a person lived a good life by observing the route that liquid poured into the channels flowed: chicha (fermented corn), holy water, or blood. Tambomachay was likely used as a spa for Inca political elite. Aqueducts and canals channel water from a nearby thermal spring into waterfalls that cascade into a small pool.
Lunch:
At a restaurant featuring typical Cusqueño fare.
Afternoon:
Free Time. Take this opportunity for independent exploration to see and do what interests you most in Cusco. We will regroup at the hotel at an announced time, transfer to the airport together, and board our flight to Lima.

We recently returned from A Taste of Peru and had such a wonderful adventure. The program and staff exceeded every expectation I had. This bucket list trip for my wife and I became so much more in the course of the week. Every little aspect was taken care of by the Road Scholar team, leaving us to enjoy and learn. Thank you, Road Scholar. I look forward to our next adventure with you.

This was a wonderful trip--many more historic sites than we imagined. We particularly enjoyed the lectures on biodiversity and politics. Our guides, Juan Carlos and Kathy, were superb! Juan Carlos, who was in charge of accommodations, among other things, was very helpful about giving suggestions for free time and shopping. Our group was so compatible we chose to have meals together even on our free time.

This was my first tour with Road Scholar, and it certainly won't be my last. It met or exceeded all of my expectations. Our tour leader, Eliacin, was superb, available 24/7 and doing so much to keep us safe, comfortable, informed, and prepared for each day's activities. The local guides and lecturers were incredible, showing genuine excitement for what they shared and demonstrating tremendous skill as teachers. The trip certainly deserves its "Keep the Pace" designation, but the itinerary is well designed to help travelers adjust to the physical demands and high altitude (and those less ambitious about uphill travel were sometimes given the option to stop and wait at a scenic view spot or marketplace while the rest of us continued onward and upward). In addition to seeing Machu Picchu and several other fascinating archaeological sites, I learned a tremendous amount about Peru's history, climate, politics, economy, culture, food, music, and more. I found every hotel very comfortable, and the food was both plentiful and delicious. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour!

An very interesting and informative program covering many aspects of Peru's pre-colonial history as well as aspects of modern life and culture. Walking stick(s) highly recommended as is medication to prevent symptoms of high-altitude illness. While Machu Picchu is a real highlight, there is so much more to learn about and enjoy.

I can't say enough positive things about this trip. For me it was at the top of my bucket list and I was not disappointed. Road Scholar made the trip interesting, informative, fun, active and challenging. Our tour guides were the best. To have an archeologist travel with us was wonderful. The hotels were all very nice, the food was outstanding and the speakers and activities that were arranged for us added a great dimension to the learning experience. My only request would be a way that people with hearing aids be able to tune into the Whisper on some sort of Bluetooth instead of trying to wear over the ear buds which kept falling out. Very frustrating. Without a doubt I will opt for another Road Scholar experience. The organization and attention to detail was outstanding from start to finish.

The tour "A Taste of Peru" was outstanding! Machu Picchu was spectacular, as expected; and the lectures and tour activities also give one a real sense of what life in Peru is like today. However, the hiking at high elevations was quite strenuous, and if you have any serious physical limitations, this may not be the tour for you.

This was an amazing program from start to finish. Our guide Victor was the consummate professional: caring, knowledgeable, and generous with his time and energy. All the lectures and local guides were simply fantastic, and helped to create a rich context for our experiential learning. Peru is breathtaking, and the Road Scholar itinerary is full and fabulous. It felt like a dream to visit Machu Picchu, and was utterly fascinating to engage with other Inca sites, learn from local artisans, and experience a deeply moving blessing from a shaman. This trip was perfect from start to finish: I felt challenged to learn but always safe and well cared for as a solo female traveler. I can't recommend this trip highly enough!!!

Going to Machu Picchu has been a childhood dream of mine and Road Scholar's tour delivered in gold. Days were packed with experiencing the joy of Peruvian people, their ancient and current traditions, their delicious and their healthy cuisine. Going to the many ancient cities of the Incas and learning about their ability to mark time with the sun and construct massive earthquake-proof structures with all sizes of granite stone ... well, you just have to be there and experience this. Get in shape by walking and climbing stairs and then GO!

Wow! I get to write a review. it was good-1st day was too much for all of us after the travel to get there. We could have used a later start and skipped going to a fish market and looking at the beach. 2nd issue was dinner was always too late-your demographic was roughly 70-80 years old and eating that late at night was not good for them, (or me, 57 yrs old) Other than that it was a good trip.

An amazing program to learn about a part of the world that I wasn't familiar with. I had taken the Online Adventure about Peru, and became intrigued enough to do this in-person program. Group Leader Kike and all of the guides/instructors - especially Kathy - were the best. Many do this program just to see Machu Picchu, which was great (we were blessed with sunshine!), but I found the entire program to be so very meaningful and experiential. A jam-packed program to see this beautiful country and meet very welcoming people!

This is a big bucket list trip. Every moment was enlightening, adventurous, and entertaining. Machu Picchu was a challenging hike. You should be prepared by using stairs a few months before your trip. There were ancient pyramids that we were allowed to walk up to the top. Older Inca villages that were climbed the day after Machu Picchu were fascinating. Sacsayhuaman was a great place for free time exploring on our own. Good broken-in shoes or hiking boots are required. Bring two pairs. I was most proud of the woman-owned business, which demonstrated the organic weaving of the alpaca wool.

The trip was planned to help you adjust to the high altitudes of the Andes, and we were coached on what to expect. I came for Machu Picchu and found a whole Peruvian culture and history! In true Road Scholar fashion, the written materials and descriptions tell only a portion of the tale. I don't know how Road Scholar finds the "extra touches," but the combination of informational materials, cultural exposure, expert guides and hassle-free timing all make this trip a lifetime experience. Fifty years ago, my bride and I wanted to visit Machu Picchu, but we were never able to. It has been on my to-do list ever since, and it was everything I hoped it would be, and more! Ever since I was a girl of twelve, I have dreamed of going to Peru! Now that I've been there and back, I feel that the Road Scholar trip was the best possible way for me to have realized my dream. The trip was beautifully organized from start to finish. Our guide Sheila did an extraordinary job of sharing her deep and intimate knowledge of her culture with us. The range of experiences we were provided with seemed beautifully curated and wonderfully varied: from ruins to natural landscapes, local markets, museums, arts-and-crafts collectives, and more....The choice of restaurants was excellent, and the food so delicious! We all felt so well taken care of, with transportation, tickets, and transfers all arranged for us. All in all, it was an experience that I will forever treasure.

If you are thinking about taking this trip, I encourage to do so, you won’t be disappointed. Peru is a beautiful country and its people are warm and welcoming. Starting at sea level and then venturing on to the high Andes, the variety in climate, topography and vegetation you see, will astound you. After receiving the final Information packet, I was overly concerned about mosquitos, which were not an issue except in the area of Machu Pichu. I treated my clothes with Permethrin prior to leaving home. I wore long pants and long sleeves as advised, and as someone who usually attracts any mosquito in the neighborhood, I didn’t experience a single bit, and neither did anyone else in our group. I did witness a man in shorts whose legs were covered in bites as he passed by us on the way down. Coca tea is very beneficial with helping adapt to the higher elevations so I drank it every morning once we left Lima. Our group leader Victor was absolutely wonderful and our local guides were excellent sources of local knowledge, history of the local people, and of the Inka and Pre-Columbian civilizations. Our Guide Coco took us up Machu Pichu, and Olllantaytambo slowly in incremental steps that allowed everyone to rest and adjust to the elevations. The packing list is important, you do need trekking poles and a rain jacket as while we were in Machu Pichu the weather changed 4 times, going from full sun, to clouds, to drizzle, to a thunder storm and hard rain, and back to full sun. It does get very cool and windy in Cusco and a packable puffy jacket is a good idea. If you have the chance, get the Inka Massage. I had the best massage of my life at the hotel Spa at Casa Andina Premium Valle Sagrado. The food throughout was excellent, it was well seasoned and flavorful, but not spicy. Do have a Pico sour, the national cocktail. Peru is waiting for you, don’t miss it.

Taste of Peru was, overall, a good experience. This was my first Roads Scholar trip and I was very impressed with how smoothly everything went. The transportation, hotels, places to visit and guidance were all first rate. What made this trip particularly good was our guide, Eliacin. If every tour guide was as good as he is no tour program would want for customers. My only complaints are there was too much time for meals, too many meals and too much food. I would also have preferred more time to hike and experience the Incan ruins. Our "ruins" guide, Ronald, was passionate about the structures he talked about during the tours but he could use some coaching re: streamlining his presentations. I was a little surprised to find myself in three formal lectures regarding Peru's ecology, economy/politics and agriculture. These were good lectures, but I would have appreciated them more if they had been given while we were out and about (visiting the fish market, the food market in the Sacred Valley, the main square in Lima). But, that is how I am - not that gung ho for classroom lectures. Machu Picchu was terrific. I am so glad I had this chance to visit this remarkable site. I was very prepared for the visit and all my expectations were met. I am very likely to do another Road Scholars program in the future now that I know how it will go.

Be ready for lots of walking, visiting some amazing archeological places, and meeting interesting local people. Our group included people from all over the country who made the trip even more interesting. Highly recommend this tour which had the right mix of adventure and free time. All the accommodations and transportation services were comfortable. The preparation materials were very helpful. Although the Peru Ministry of Culture states in their materials that walking sticks are not permitted in Machu Picchu, they are indeed allowed and very helpful; be prepared for biting insects at this most amazing place by using insect repellant and wearing long sleeves. Overall, another great Road Scholar experience!

My first, but hopefully not my last, Road Scholar trip. As a frequent traveler who normally goes off on my own, I was a bit hesitant to go on a structured program like this one. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed just sitting back and letting our very competent guide, Elias, take care of all the details of this week long tour. I had no fear that my expectations wouldn't be met as he had every little detail under control. His frequent "check ins" with me that all was "Okie dokie" (as he put it) was refreshing. I highly recommend Road Scholar for your travel tour experience. As was I, you'll not be disappointed.

This program exceeded my expectations. My main goal was to fulfill a lifelong dream to see Machu Picchu. I achieved that and so much more appreciation for Peru, its culture and history. The tour was well-organized and, as a solo traveler, I especially enjoyed the company of the well traveled, interesting people in my group.

What a memorable trip! So much is packed into a short week. First of all, while Machu Picchu is indeed wonderful and Inca architecture is monumental, there is so much more to Andean cultures. This trip tantalizes and makes me to want visit Peru again soon to explore the different cultures. Our trip is made extremely pleasurable by our guide Paco whose superb organization skill and caring personality made him an ideal leader for this trip. As with my other RS trips, my fellow travelers are a friendly and inquisitive group, interested in exploring other cultures in a respectful way. Peruvian food is a big surprise-- we did not know how good it was and the its variety. There was not a single bad meal on this trip and even the buffets are remarkably good. I was thrilled to try the local specialty --Cuy (Guinea Pig). OK, so it tasted like chicken. :) All the hotel accommodations are good to excellent. Our favorite was the Casa Andina Machu Picchu where we were upgraded to river-view rooms and we went to sleep next to the rumble of a raging river -- best night of sleep for me. Highly recommended, only wish it was longer.

This was indeed a Trip of a Lifetime. I learned SO much and enjoyed the one-on-one cultural connections provided by the knowledgeable local tour guides. An active adventure, I suggest following the preparatory advice of RS to do lots of up and downhill walking ahead (2 months) of time to more easily acclimate to the hills and elevations. And have well broken-in hiking shoes. So glad I did this Peruvian adventure!

This program is outstanding. Machu Picchu is on many "bucket lists". This is the best way to see it and learn about Peru. Peru has delicious foods and amazing Inca history. This is a very active trip at high elevations, so those with physical challenges or respiratory issues will find it difficult.

This is not for a review, but forgot to mention this -- Peru is the perfect place for an extension. I'm sure Covid caused some revision for you. I extended my trip and took PeruHop to Paracas and some extra time in Lima -- amazingly wonderful places. The National Park was beyond beautiful. My sister likes to travel to Western Europe but I enticed her on this trip because I love the discovery of other cultures and the diversity. I think I converted her. There is nothing I would change, unless it was possible to make the days longer so more of this diverse nation and its welcoming culture could be savored. Lima sits on a high bluff over the Pacific, spectacular views. The center of the country is wide open with vast spaces, wide skies and the Andes on the horizon, some snowcapped. It has that kind of the "end of the earth" feeling, room to move and explore. The highly developed pre-Columbian culture, and the people who still live as their ancestors did added to the richness. Just as the Grand Canyon is not the sum total of the U.S., Macchu Picchu is not the totality of Peru. As always on a Road Scholar trip amazing well-educated guides and interesting companions.

Fakhruddin – Class of 2016 | Evanston, IL
My Trip to Peru I left my home in Evanston eleven days ago and returned home yesterday. I feel as if I had spent ten days in the garden of Eden, a land where rivers of cool fresh water come tumbling down from snow peeked mountain tops to water trees and bushes growing colorful flowers and sheltering multitudes of colorful species of birds, irrigating vast farms producing bountiful foods and fruits not grown anywhere else, and studded here and there with ancient ruins of temples to the sun God, mother earth and life itself with the past (symbolized by the serpent), the present (symbolized by puma) and the future (symbolized by the condor). I felt God was present everywhere. I saw llamas, alpacas, dogs and cats roaming freely amongst people in celebratory cheerful bright colors with the cheer, humility and hospitality of a people cradled in the arms of a bountiful, gentle and merciful God. Such an experience could only be had in a carefully orchestrated program led by soulful, thoughtful, hardworking, knowledgeable and caring leader such as Paco and his assistant Jorge. I thank them for this gift which to me is life transforming.

Seeing Machu Picchu has been on my 'to do' list for a very long time so I was very excited to finally get there. What I found though was that there was so much more to a Road Scholar trip (this was my first) and I can't believe how much that additional learning opportunities and experiences were included that made it a much more special trip than I could have imagined. It made me fall in love with Peru. I also realized that before going I was overly concerned about the altitude and strenuousness of the trip. I am one of average fitness and it was just fine. I also knew that if I had any difficulty keeping up there would always be a staff person to assist.

Fantastic active paced adventure. Good combination of several short 1-2hr lectures followed by field trips to reinforce the lecture content. Excellent in-country tour guides coordinating the logistics to support the tour day. Another 1-2 hours at Machu Pichu the same day rather than an optional extra cost option would have been nice.

The Peru program was a wonderful experience. I'm not an athlete, but I managed to handle the trip well; the guides were careful to mix walking, standing to listen, and seated transportation well. Very little waiting in line -- tickets handed out by group leader. Information about any changes was shared; we always knew what to expect. Informative guides, a beautiful place. This is a fascinating program. I found it strenuous because I did struggle with the effects of high altitude even with medication. However , it was worth the effort. Peru was a delightful surprise .Lima is a cosmopolitan city. The food is outstanding throughout Peru. It is fresh, healthy and beautifully prepared. The highlight is learning about Inca culture and its impact on modern day Peru. The lectures ranged from politics to agriculture to music. Each lecturer was engaging and informative. Our primary guides, Vlad and Eduard , were outstanding. They were knowledgeable , proud of their country and attentive to our needs. I found all but one hotel satisfactory. Peruvians are warm and hospitable. And, of course, your first sight of Machu Picchu is an "aha" moment.

This was a great trip. The guides were excellent and informative. I wish the group was a little smaller, especially when we were at Machu Picchu. Many people had issues with the altitude, which I did not, because I live in Denver and hike at altitude frequently. I think for that reason the trip should be listed as a little harder than other "keep the pace" trips.

This was a very good trip. We saw it all. Good leaders, good food (too good and too plentiful), and of course Machu Picchu is super. Be prepared for altitude challenges. Only criticism: the trip could have included a bit more exercise, the only real exertion was at Machu Picchu. Also, fewer food market visits (there were 3), and perhaps add a visit to a silversmith or some other indigenous craftsman.

Perspectives of Peru was a greatly informative and explorative program. This was my first group trip, and it completely blew me away. The lodging was immaculate, and the meals were the finest available. Our local guides, Enrique and Ronaldo, immersed us in Peruvian culture and history. This program needs to be a few days longer to allow more exploration of cultural sites. This trip was like a trailer for a movie, you get the highlights, but you end up wanting to see more! The aforementioned staff were easy to deal with, accomodating, and overall great representatives. I am much younger than the usual demographics for Road Scholar, but even I want to retire to Peru after this trip!
