Activity Note
We’ll give you a capsule look at Mount Desert Island, “the jewel of New England.”
Afternoon:
Check in with your Road Scholar group leader in the breakfast room across from the motel lobby between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. The Bar Harbor Villager is located in downtown Bar Harbor and is within short walking distance to downtown shops and attractions. We'll have our first gathering at 4:15 to get to know each other and to receive an introduction to Acadia National Park. We’ll give you a capsule look at Mount Desert Island, “the jewel of New England,” and show you the possible routes we’ll be hiking this week in Acadia National Park. Mount Desert, known for its dramatic scenery and universal appeal, is the second largest island on the east coast. Please be at the motel's cafe (across the lot from the office) by 3:45 so we can walk to our destination and begin promptly.
Dinner:
We’ll dine at a local restaurant in downtown Bar Harbor.
Evening:
Evening free to explore Bar Harbor area.
Activity Note
Today we’ll take to the water in our tandem sea kayaks and will see why the waters surrounding Mount Desert Island constitute one of the premier kayaking venues on the east coast. Our adventure will be about five hours, including paddling lesson, boat fitting and a leisurely lunch break on an island.
Breakfast:
A continental breakfast will be available at the motel.
Morning:
We'll do a Victorian walking tour, focusing on the era when Bar Harbor was the country's most exclusive and illustrious resort. Then we’ll go paddling, experiencing the thrill of gliding through the pristine waters of the Gulf of Maine. Using ultra-stable tandem kayaks, we’ll choose a route that will best fit the conditions. We might kayak among the glacial-carved Porcupine Islands of Frenchman Bay, or perhaps we’ll head to scenic Blue Hill Bay, on the western side of Mount Desert Island. Whatever the location, we’ll observe a gorgeous area from the unique perspective of a sea kayak. Our Registered Maine Guides will provide basic paddling instruction, and will stop often to give commentary. Along the way, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for different kinds of wildlife that we often see on the water – harbor seals and porpoises, cormorants, bald eagles and other seabirds.
Lunch:
We'll enjoy a picnic lunch somewhere along our kayaking route, probably on a cobble beach. Hardwood Island, with its nearby mussel farms, might be a good choice. We'll choose from a variety of sandwich offerings.
Afternoon:
We’ll continue our kayaking expedition after lunch; it’s amazing how quickly paddling skills improve with a little repetition. As nearby lobster boats haul their trips in the chilly waters, we’ll make our way to our final destination.
Dinner:
This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.
Evening:
Free time.
Activity Note
We’ll visit the ruins of the home of the father of Acadia National Park, followed by biking on the unique carriage roads of Acadia – hard-packed gravel roads which are perfect for cycling. We’ll cover about 18 miles today on our bikes.
Breakfast:
A continental breakfast will be available at the motel.
Morning:
Before biking, we'll head to Oldfarm, the ruins of the home of George B. Dorr, who's considered the father of Acadia National Park, and we'll learn the fascinating story of how the park was founded and how it came to be the only park in the entire national park system in which the land was donated rather than purchased by the government. To prepare for biking the carriage roads, your group leader will make sure you’re comfortable with your 21-speed mountain or hybrid bike. We’ll begin our biking on the carriage roads of Acadia, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. These unique roads are closed to motorized traffic – thus they’re perfect for bicycling -- and are home to a dazzling array of scenery. Eagle Lake and Jordan Pond, carved by a glacier thousands of years ago, feature clear, cold water; we’ll skirt both of them on our morning ride. We’ll encounter rolling terrain – yes, there are hills, but they’re manageable -- and our group will move at a comfortable pace. Today’s cycling adventure will last five to six hours, including frequent breaks and our lunch period.
Lunch:
We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch – individually prepared, of course – on the tea lawn of the Jordan Pond House, an iconic landmark in Acadia. From the gentle sloping shores above Jordan Pond, you’ll experience an unforgettable vista of the water and the Bubbles, twin mountains that dominate the northern end of the lake.
Afternoon:
After lunch, we’ll leave Jordan Pond to continue our cycling trip, passing one of the stone gatehouses that mark the entrance to the carriage roads; the detail is interesting, and the skill of the masons who built this gatehouse is evident. There’s an optional side trip up Day Mountain, with gorgeous views south across the Gulf of Maine, with the Cranberry Islands dotting the seascape. We’ll also pass Bubble Pond, with the craggy west slope of Cadillac Mountain jutting out of the water to form a near-vertical granite face.
Dinner:
We’ll again dine at a downtown Bar Harbor restaurant, within easy walking distance of our motel. Along the way, we can browse the many galleries and shops which line Bar Harbor’s streets, perhaps finding that perfect memento to take home as a lasting memory of Acadia.
Evening:
Free time.
Activity Note
At 1532 feet, Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the east coast of North America, and today we’ll cap our week with a spectacular hike up the South Ridge Trail. The trailhead is at a few hundred feet of elevation, so we won’t actually ascend the entire 1532 feet.
Breakfast:
A continental breakfast will be available at the motel.
Morning:
A lobster expert will demonstrate, using authentic gear and live lobsters, how Maine's most famous sea creatures are caught and what the future of the industry looks like. Then the hiking begins! Weather permitting, we’ll tackle Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the eastern seaboard of North America. We'll probably head up the south ridge trail, enjoying spectacular views along the way. On many days of the year, the summit is the first place in the United States to receive the rays of the sun. The south ridge is the gentlest of the three trails up Cadillac; it’s a well-traversed path which is popular among visitors to Acadia.
Lunch:
One of the pleasures of hiking in Acadia is having our picnic lunches – individually prepared sandwiches – in some spectacular settings. We’ll stop somewhere on the slopes of Cadillac Mountain to relax, refuel and ponder the beauty of Acadia.
Afternoon:
We'll continue our hike, noticing the unique geological features carved out by the Wisconsin Glacier thousands of years ago. We'll enjoy the views eastward towards Schoodic Peninsula, a spectacular headland that juts into the Gulf of Maine.
Dinner:
Tonight we'll enjoy an old-fashioned Down East shore feast, featuring the state’s most well-known crustacean -- Homarus Americanus, the North American cold-water lobster.
Evening:
Free time to explore Bar Harbor
Activity Note
This morning, we’ll choose either sea kayaking, hiking or biking, making sure we get an early start so we can be finished at noon, thus leaving everyone a full afternoon to explore Mount Desert Island and the surrounding area on your own.
Breakfast:
A continental breakfast will be available at the motel.
Morning:
Whichever activity we choose, we'll have great fun as we enjoy one final morning on Mount Desert Island. A good possibility is pedaling our bikes along Sargent Drive, which borders Somes Sound, the only fjord on the east coast of North America. We'll ride in the shadow of the majestic Norumbega Mountain, with views westward towards Acadia Mountain and St. Saveur Mountain. Towards the end of our ride we'll pass many of the Victorian "cottages" still surviving from the glory days of Mount Desert Island as a summer colony.
Lunch:
Lunch on your own.
Afternoon:
You're free this afternoon to explore Mount Desert Island in whichever way you choose, and we'll be happy to provide suggestions and advice on the many activities available.
Dinner:
You're on your own for dinner tonight in one of the island's many dining establishments.
Activity Note
Whichever activity we choose, we'll have great fun as we enjoy one final morning on Mount Desert Island. We’ll get an early start to ensure there’s time to ready ourselves for our last picnic lunch and “graduation,” set in a beautiful spot overlooking Frenchman Bay.
Breakfast:
A continental breakfast will be available at the motel.

Our Road Scholar week will come to an end as we enjoy a picnic lunch at Albert Meadow; take part in a brief “graduation” ceremony; and savor our memories of a week on the magnificent Maine coast.

Uplifting for me as a 73 year old... expanding my potential future adventure considerations that I should be able to accomplish, but might have had more doubts prior to accomplishing this ANP Multisport in August 2024. My 3 friends that I brought, thought it well worth the money (even spending a little more money on one person/room).

Highly recommend this program to folks who like to be outdoors and active and who’d enjoy a bit of a physical challenge while at the same time learn a lot about the history of the island before and after it was settled by “rusticators,” about lobsters and lobster fishermen, and about how the island became mostly national park. It was a busy and wonderful week.

This was my first Road Scholar program, and it was everything and more than I hoped it would be. I'm a cyclist, so that was the easy part for me. The hike was the most challenging hike I've ever done, and I was proud of myself for completing it. The kayaking was fun and the guides were great at keeping us all together. One of my highlights was seeing and photographing bald eagles. I LOVED my first Road Scholar trip, and look forward to the next one.

This should never have been listed as outdoor spirited. It was definitely challenging and beyond my capabilities. The entire trip was a struggle instead of being enjoyable. The hike up Cadillac Mountain in 90 degree heat was dangerous. Your organization is lucky no one got heat stroke. The accommodation's were good. Meals were mediocre. Because of the heat, mayonnaise should never have been put on sandwiches ( boxed lunches) but should have been provided in packets. Food poisoning waiting to happen. Overall, the trip was a disappointment.

Dear Janis, We’re sorry to hear you did not completely enjoy your experience with us. We are going to take a closer look at the activity level to ensure the program is accurately described. This program did run during a heat wave and the wellbeing of our participants is always of high importance. Some activities were shuffled around, as much as possible, while still trying to provide all excursions as promised for this outdoor adventure. Including the highlight hike on Cadillac Mountain. We hope you give us another try and we see you on your next adventure soon. Sincerely, Road Scholar

This trip allowed me to explore Acadia NP by bike, on foot, and in sea kayaks! It was a great week with wonderful guides and interesting trip mates. The food and accommodations were great! All adventures were either walking distance or a short van ride away.

This trip was wonderful in every aspect, from our wonderful guide, Linda, to the upbeat fellow participants, to the exciting activities. The hotel in Bar Harbor was perfect for my needs-- in town and close to the harbor. I would highly recommend this trip to those who are in decent shape, and want a bit of a challenge. Acadia NP is awesome!

I recommend the Multi-Sport (Kayaking, Biking and Hiking) in Acadia National Park. Everything about the trip was good. When I felt a bit overwhelmed in the Kayak, on the bike, or on the trail up the mountain, the staff were right there encouraging me. The people were great as were the accommodations & food.

Paul – Class of 2017 | Madison, WI
Like our past 5 Road Scholar trips (all outdoor adventures), this was very well organized, with spectacular scenery, outstanding presentations, much "on site" information as we participated with terrific guidance, and local color, history, and nature facts. Bar Harbor and Desert Island are truly unique, and beautiful, with natural beauty, and important natural and social history. Our guide and group leader, Bill Langlois was kind, humorous, attentive, and a skilled hiker, biker and kayaker. He really looked out for each of us, every minute of every activity! The experience was enhanced so much by the passion, facts, depth of perspective, and philosophy of Glenn Tucker, whose love for the nature, history, culture, and life of the area was bolstered by the daily "life lesson" quotes he sent us off on, and his really outstanding presentations on Bar Harbor, Maine, and the life and culture of the lobstermen. Paul and Tracy Bridges were kind and wonderful presenters, and Paul was a great addition on the hike to the top of Cadillac mountain (my wife's favorite activity). Mine was the open sea Kayaking far out into Frenchman's bay and around the several Porcupine Islands, seeing many different seabirds, porpoises, and the sights of the fishing and other crafts. The food was terrific, especially the lobster dinner the night of Glenn's Lobstermen presentation, and the boxed lunches we had on our day trips were really great! My wife enjoyed lobster each of 5 nights, and each night prepared differently. We learned so much, and were so taken with the natural beauty of the woods, water and mountains each day! We'd recommend this to anyone that loves being outside, taking in the smells and sights of nature, with wonderful presenters, and with ~ 20 other like minded individuals who are all eager to learn, and appreciative of the wonderful experience.

We just finished a wonderful trying Acadia National Park and Bar harbor. It was the multi sport activities and we had a ton of fun getting to know each other and learning so much about the area while while getting tons of exercise. it's such a beautiful area with many interesting things to do learned much more than the average visitor by joining Road Scholar.

This was a great program with excellent leaders. One of the things I really appreciated was that they took care of all the planning and daily logistics: the accommodations, the daily travel, the restaurants, getting the bikes and kayaks arranged and the hiking trails identified. All I needed to do was show up and enjoy it, which made it much more relaxing than other "active" vacations.

This wonderful tour includes not only exceptionally beautiful scenery and fun activities, but also, so much more added educational experiences. The tour leader and educators were exceptional. However, be prepared as the sport activities are more strenuous than most Road Scholars tours rated as "Spirited."

Hiking, biking, and kayaking Acadia National Park in Maine was the best trip we've ever been on. Weaving lecture walks into each morning made for a much deeper connection to an area of the US we've never experienced before. We are very active outdoors and this "spirited" trip was perfect for our abilities in kayaks, on bikes, and hiking. Since we've gotten home we have been recommending Road Scholars to all of our friends. You can't go wrong with this organization.

Wow, what a trip!! The Group Leaders, Bill and Glenn, were fantastic with their knowledge of the area and great sense of humor. I never thought I would ever kayak on the ocean, but it was a wonderful experience. The climb up to the top of Cadillac Mountain was challenging but what views from the top!! Biking the carriage trails was wonderful, stopping at the bridges and carriage house. It was a very educational, fun, and exciting trip.

The Multi-Sport adventure in Acadia National Park was fun, challenging and educational. I learned the importance of many philanthropists to the town of Bar Harbor and to the park. The multi-sport aspect provided challenging and fun activities each day. This made for a very fun and rewarding experience in a beautiful setting. A great week all around with excellent leaders that made it safe and educational.

I attended the Hiking, Biking, Sea Kayaking in Acadia National Park. The best part were the guides, Ellen and Paul who were so kind and patient and shared lots of fun facts (or was it legends) about Bar Harbor. I loved Glenn's presentation on lobsters - really fun! A great balance of activities and free time. Location of motel was perfect - live acoustic music across the street in a lovely park like setting and a cool restaurant called Blaze.

What a wonderful adventure - Acadia and Bar Harbor are just beautiful to see. Fun guides with: lots of information to satisfy our thirst for local knowledge, ability to flex schedule so we had the best experience for changing weather, and top-notch experience to do what guides do best. Fellow travelers were a diverse and interesting bunch whose company I enjoyed very much. I appreciated the budget accommodations for what they were. I recommend this trip and a visit to Bar Harbor and Acadia NP as a top trip for active-minded folks.

This was my 16th program with RS and it was excellent! The biking was on the carriage roads of Acadia - no cars allowed. The hike up to Cadillac mountain was challenging and the views were breathtaking. The sea kayaking was my favorite, we stopped for lunch on one of the Porcupine islands - so fun!

This Multi Sport program in Bar Harbor and Acadia was great in every way. The leaders were enthusiastic and so knowledgeable about the sports and the area and the history and the lifestyle of the population there. We have made many deposits in our "memory banks" from this experience.

This Road Scholar multi sport adventure was terrific and superior to what I would have been able to enjoy had I organized it myself and gone solo. Given the equipment, lessons, accommodation and all, I felt this was a very good value. I'm already searching for my next Road Scholar adventure.

IMO there's no better way to experience Maine and the Acadia National Park! No way I could have figured out and coordinated all that on my own.

If there is such a thing as a crash course in the culture surrounding Acadia National Park, this tour is it. The history came alive, adding to a better understanding of how Bar Harbor came to be and why people come to stay. The beauty of the place is unique and full of charm. Hiking, biking, and kayaking is the best way to appreciate that. What a wonderful program!

Bar Harbor, Maine is an idyllic place to enjoy the great outdoors through biking, hiking, and kayaking. This trip makes it all possible with a trip leader that knows the area. A perfect vacation for the physically active.

This trip was amazing. Even though I thought the information provided understated the physical ability needed to perform the activities, I thought it was great and loved the challenges.
