Iceland with my Grandson was SO VERY SPECIAL. From airport pickup to airport drop off, our Road Scholar guides made the trip fun, active, memorable, as comfortable as being away from home can be, and educational.

The grandparent/grandchild trip to Iceland is outstanding! I plan to take my other grandchildren on Road Scholar trips…their choice!
— Review left August 4, 2024
An all around amazing experience! What a terrific was to spend time with a grandchild, learning about such a fascinating country. The tour was packed with interesting experiences ranging from the ocean to the glaciers and areas in between. We learned so much about the culture, history, people and physical makeup of Iceland.
— Review left July 31, 2024
This was an outstanding program and I feel this truly showed the fire and ice of Iceland. The activities were varied and interesting and I had the chance to bond with my granddaughter. I learned so much about the land and people. I am not sure what she learned, but she had a good time. She is normally shy and reserved but she interacted well with the others. I plan to take all my grandchildren on Road Scholar trips.
— Review left July 14, 2024
My granddaughter and I enjoyed a variety of activities that we both enjoyed including horseback riding, walking inside a glacier, whale watching, an playing with goats and spending time on a cattle farm.
— Review left July 9, 2024
This adventure had many good features, the variety of experiences (horseback riding, goat farm, watching and learning traditional dances, dairy farm, bird watching from a boat- where we saw puffins!- glacier cave, geothermal swim and lots of waterfalls and the Geyser). My grandchild and I were experienced so many positive moments - far more than I could have imagined!
Our guide and assistant did their best to ensure that everyone was safe and had the full Iceland experience.
— Review left July 8, 2024
We loved Iceland! The concept of Grandparent/Grandchildren all within the same age bracket made the trip even better. The teens bonded quickly, and often met before the official start of the day's program and in the evening.
— Review left August 1, 2023
Iceland’s amazing history and scenery presented in a way that engages and entertains your grandchild — and you, too!
— Review left July 30, 2023
Iceland is a delightful surprise!
— Review left July 24, 2023
Loved the trip….group leaders were EXCELLENT! And they worked great together. My only complaint at all is that there was no choice in meals….well, either vegetarian or what everyone had…..why not let us order from a small selection at the beginning of the trip as most of the programs I have attended do??? I thought I received an evaluation email from you but it disappeared….please send again.
— Review left July 15, 2023
My husband and I attended with our grandson. In the beginning he was complaining about the cost. As the trip went forward, he stopped as he saw the incredible value. We sampled so many wonderful Iceland experiences and saw so much. The trip was planned to stay in two hotels so the travel and packing was kept to a minimum. We all enjoyed everything we did (OK, walking under the glacier was not my favorite) The food was all amazing - higher quality than I had anticipated - and they did a lot to accommodate the fact that we do not eat meat. There were several unique stops that were so enjoyable - Rock and Trolls, the Viking long house, the dairy farm, and the greenhouse. We did so many things we would not have found on our own. We would have enjoyed having a few more minutes in some of these wonderful sites. The beauty of Iceland is incredible - the water so clear and abundant. The land so wild.
I can't say enough about the two Road Scholar guides. Inga was so well informed and comfortable in sharing information and answering questions. Shannon was constantly checking in with people, making sure the trip was working for us all, trouble-shooting anything that we came up with. This is the kind of trip that really cements Road Scholars reputation for quality travel.
Finally, the other folks on the trip were all pretty agreeable, and game for trying whatever came along.
— Review left July 15, 2023
Iceland is a marvelous place to visit and the Road Scholar program meant you got maximum benefit for the time invested.
— Review left July 9, 2023
Iceland is a magnificent place, its physical features dramatic and beautiful, the challenges of its climate such a riveting facet of the country's existence. I am so glad to have taken this tour and would love to come back and explore more on my own.
— Review left July 9, 2023
Outstanding trip for both grandparents and grandkids. Fast-paced, variety of experiences. Lots of knowledge about Iceland, its geology, history (sagas), and current/future place in the world.
— Review left August 8, 2022
A wonderful trip….it moved right along and I learned so much. It was physically exhilarating, enjoyable and the food was really, really good!
— Review left July 27, 2022
Wonderful trip, with engaging adventures and learning opportunities for all ages. Our grandson loved it and made some good friends.
— Review left July 26, 2022
This trip met our expectations. The leaders were knowledgable. We learned a lot about Iceland and its people. It was a once in a lifetime experience with our grandson. Thanks for helping us make these memories.
— Review left July 25, 2022
The "Iceland, Land of Fire and Ice" program provided a wide range of information on the place and people in a format that was both interesting and fun for young and old and an excellent opportunity for bonding of grandparents and their grandchildren.
— Review left July 24, 2022
A wonderfully designed program mixing fun activities for kids with learning opportunities. Kristin, our guide was excellent- very knowledgeable and passionate about her native country. Hearing our grandson rattle on enthusiastically about all of his adventures to his parents upon returning home made us realize how much he has absorbed and how much he enjoyed the other children.
— Review left July 18, 2022
This program is great for 12-15 year old youth. It is active and engaging. The lodging was very good. Experiencing horseback riding, the inside of a glacier, bird watching, history of Viking exploration, Icelandic sagas, history, and dancing makes this an all inclusive program. Highly recommend.
— Review left July 15, 2022
I just returned from the Iceland grandparent trip taken with my 13 year old grandson. I highly recommend this trip! It was educational and adventurous. The program was diverse in activities and showed us life in Iceland. I’m sure I got to experience many more adventures seeing Iceland with my grandson, than I would have if I did it on my own. My grandson made 12 new friends and experienced travel in a new way. Great trip!
— Review left July 11, 2022
All of my Road Scholar adventures have forged meaningful connections between group members and deepened my understanding of other cultures.
— Review left July 10, 2022
We found Iceland to be an interesting country, much to see. In its own way quite beautiful and unique. The touring was good.
We were quite disappointed in the accommodations. Small rooms sometimes with no room even for suitcases. Beds were awkward, sheets didn't fit. Our granddaughter basically slept on a pallet - she ended up choosing the floor next to it. Few restroom facilities. 2 Showers for 20 or more people. One toilet and sink on each of 4 floors.
A separate smaller building accommodated about 10 additional people. I think they had a single bathroom.
The food was not "buffet." While the cooking was quite good, if you didn't like what the entree being served (our granddaughter did not a couple of times) you went hungry. Meals for thirty were served in three relatively small rooms, with a table in each taking up most of the room. Squeezed close together.
The homeowners/cooks were very pleasant and, cooking good. Same things every morning, and same foods to accompany entrees for dinner.
Lunches out were very good, really enjoyed those.
We were uncomfortable with the activity the last night where grandchildren were each asked to write a note to their grandparents and then read it to the group. Grandparents likewise asked to share what they loved about their grandchild with the group. Awkward and made many of the kids feel uncomfortable, particularly the younger ones who did not write as well.
And - we were all asked to sign an agreement stating that we would make our beds, remove our shoes (as far as I knew no one balked at this - what was the point) and a few other things that seemed odd to ask of someone over the age of 5.
While I liked Iceland, I would recommend someone seek a different tour group or go on their own.
My first experience with RoadScholar. I'm told not to give up - others have had good experiences. So we probably will try again.
