At a Glance

Join us for an engaging dialogue with Walter Naegle, the surviving partner of Civil Rights Leader Bayard Rustin who organized the pivotal March on Washington in 1963. Facilitated by a Road Scholar moderator, this heartwarming conversation will reveal personal stories and insights from Mr. Naegle’s time with Bayard Rustin. In celebration of the 61st anniversary of the March on Washington, this session promises a unique perspective on Bayard Rustin’s enduring contributions to human dignity, equality and non-violent tactics. As an African American and as a gay man, Rustin’s legacy of peaceful and strategic advocacy continues to inspire. When Naegle posthumously accepted Rustin’s Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013, President Barack Obama remarked, “For decades, this great leader, often at Dr. King’s side, was denied his rightful place in history because he was openly gay. No medal can change that, but today, we honor Bayard Rustin’s memory by taking our place in his march towards true equality, no matter who we are or who we love.”
