Activity Note
Today’s session will begin at 1:45 p.m. Eastern Time and end at 5:00 p.m. Several days before the program, the Group Leader will email handouts to supplement the lectures and field trips and will also recommend any additional reading or background research to complement the day’s themes.
Afternoon:
1:45 p.m. Welcome and Orientation. Our Group Leader will greet us and provide a brief overview of the program and today’s schedule including Zoom protocol. 2:00 p.m. Introductions. We will say hello to one another, share our expectations, and meet our resident expert who will give lectures and lead virtual field trips. 2:25 p.m. Lecture. We will learn about a little-known side of Peru and its different natural regions. From the dramatic coastal desert to the exuberant rain forest on the other side of the mountain range of the Andes, Peru is an exceptionally rich country. 2:55 p.m. Break. 3:05 p.m. Virtual field trip. We will “visit” Lima, capital of Peru. Founded in 1535 as the Spanish capital of the newly conquered lands, almost a decade later it was designated as the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru. Among the highlights we will see are the Main Square, Presidential Palace, Basilica Cathedral, and other important buildings in the downtown area where this clash of civilizations left its marks. We will also learn from our local experts that Spaniards were not the first inhabitants in this beautiful city located by the Pacific Ocean. 3:45 p.m. Q&A Session. 4:00 p.m. Break. 4:10 p.m. Lecture. We will learn about “actual” Lima and its people. Meet a Limeño — a local resident — and learn about some places that are only for locals. You will be able to ask what you like. 4:50 p.m. Wrap-up and notes for tomorrow. 5:00 p.m. Today’s session will end.
Activity Note
Today’s session will begin at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time and end at 5:00 p.m.
Afternoon:
2:00 p.m. Review of the day. 2:05 p.m. Virtual field trip. We will take a virtual walk along the cobblestone streets of Cuzco, capital of the Inca Empire, known as “the navel of the world” and a UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site. We will be able to admire highly crafted early stone architecture preserved in the foundations and lower stories of Spanish colonial structures in their historical context. The Inca civilization flourished in ancient Peru between c. 1400 and 1534 CE. Pachacutec, the ninth Inca ruler, was one of the most successful. The empire eventually extended across western South America from Quito in the north to Santiago in the south, making it the largest empire ever seen in the Americas. 2:45 p.m. Interactive Q&A session. 2:55 p.m. Break. 3:05 p.m. Lecture. We will learn about Inca religion and, more specifically, about the “cosmovision” of Andean civilizations which the Incas also observed. As was the case with many of these ancient cultures, religion was indivisible from history, politics, and indeed all facets of community life. We will also learn about the Qorikancha (Coricancha) archaeological site, once the sacred Temple of the Sun complex. We will also learn about Sacsayhuaman, the last Inca fortress, as well as why and when the Empire fell. 3:45 p.m. Interactive Q&A. 4:00 p.m. Break. 4:10 p.m. Lecture. We will learn about influences of the imperial past on the present day, how the educational and health systems work, and everyday Cusqueño life as we “meet” a local resident. We will be able to chat and ask question. 4:50 p.m. Wrap-up and notes for tomorrow. 5:00 p.m. Today’s session will end.
Activity Note
Today’s session will begin at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time and end at 5:00 p.m.
Afternoon:
2:00 p.m. Review of the day. 2:05 p.m. Virtual field trip. Our resident expert will take us on a virtual journey to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, now known as the Urubamba Valley. This area is the perfect example of how the Inca administration worked on a daily basis. We will “visit” Morai, where we will learn how the agricultural and terrace system worked and still works. Textiles and pottery are a very important part of the Andean life then and now, and so we will visit Chincheros to learn about the process of dying fabrics and producing magical colors from the nature. We’ll also see how past and present coexist harmoniously in Ollataytambo, the only living Inca city that has survived 500 years and preserves Quechua traditions. 2:45 p.m. Interactive Q & A session. 2:55 p.m. Break. 3:05 p.m. Lecture. Our expert will explain the great network of communication that connected the Inca Empire which, at its peak, comprised 12 million people and covered what is now Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and Argentina, and part of Colombia and Ecuador. We will learn how they built the Inca Trail: the road system that allowed their “chasquis” — runners — to deliver messages throughout the empire. How did they collect taxes and tributes and keep track of them? Did they have a currency? Did they have a writing system? We’ll find the answers to these questions and more. 3:40 p.m. Interactive Q & A session. 3:50 p.m. Break. 4:00 p.m. Virtual field trip. Machu Picchu is deservedly a wonder of the world and the most famous Inca wonder. We will see the most important spots within the archeological ruin and learn about the importance of each structure. 4:40 p.m. Interactive Q&A. 4:50 p.m. Wrap-up and farewells. We’ll recall what we’ve learned during our virtual adventure and say farewell to new Road Scholar friends. 5:00 p.m. This concludes our program.

The online presentation was interesting and very well done. Both the moderator, Mariano, and local expert, Oscar, were enthusiastic about sharing information about Peru, Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu. The questions that came up in the Q&A time brought up interesting topics but nothing stumped Oscar. Very pleased with the whole online course. I don't know if I will travel to Peru but I am definitely interested now.

This program covered each destination (Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu)with wonderful teaching and high quality audio-visual materials. The pace of teaching was just right - not too fast or too slow, with pauses to take several questions from participants, who put them in the chat. Highly recommend this program!

This program was truly outstanding. If you are interested in Peru and Machu Picchu please take advantage of this class. You will not be disappointed! Oscar, the instructor, is excellent. We are going to Machu Picchu on a Road Scholar trip in April and this class was an extraordinary introduction. We can't wait to see it all in person soon!

In addition to much less expense and scheduling issues for flights, the on-line training was extremely informative and much less tiring than actually travelling to Peru. Focus was upon learning and not upon getting there and back.

Outstanding, creative use of technology and interactive activities that bring the geography, culture and people to life to make it (almost) feel like being there. This was a great program that I registered for because, while I would love to visit Peru, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, most likely I will not get there in my lifetime, especially after losing 2 years of travel due to COVID. I consider the Road Scholar online courses to be the next best thing to actually traveling to the country. The Program Guide (Dario) and Program Instructor (Oscar) were wonderful, welcoming and knowledgeable. I would recommend this online program for anyone who would like to learn more about Peru and the Inca Empire, even if you think you may one day travel there in person.

The online course to Peru was really wonderful and I was amazed how they could do such a great job showing us Lima, Cuzco, and Machu Picchu with pictures, videos, and interviews with people who live in Lima and Cuzco. Dario was a terrific group leader and Oscar had in-depth knowledge of all three places and pointed out a lot of things and gave us information I never would have learned by watching a travel video or reading a book. They also did a great job by answering our many questions. Thanks for such a great course! It made me want to go see Machu Picchu in person and taking the online course ahead of time would help me get more out of it. I plan on taking more online courses in the future.

I urge anyone with an interest in Machu Pichu and Peru to take this virtual program. Even if you plan to take an in person visit to Peru this seminar would serve as an excellent preparation. The instructor, Oscar, was the best instructor I have ever had. He adeptly wove history, culture, art, archaeology and politics together in an informative and exciting way. He also has the talent of presenting with humor and passion in his subject. It's an unbeatable combination. Dario who was our group leader led the proceedings with grace and good humor and adeptly kept things moving along. Don't hesitate if you are on the fence - sign up for this program! I believed that my travel days with Road Scholar had ended because of advanced age and reduced mobility. Then online adventures became available. After much thought I finally decided to sign up for "Peru and Machu Picchu". It was an excellent choice. The information presented by Oscar was very enlightening and his photography was outstanding. Our guide Oscar Oviedo and our R S leader Dario Jaremczuk had spent much time and effort converting the in-person program to a virtual format that allowed us to feel that we were actually walking through Cusco's streets or hiking the Inca Trail. They lay the wonders of Peru before us in a way that let me feel that I had actually visited this fascinating country from the coastal city of Lima to the heights of Machu Picchu. Oscar's gorgeous photos and videos aided greatly in make the experience real.

I always wanted to travel to Peru, but it did not happen. This online trip covered everything I wanted to see If I could have gone in person. The tour instructor/expert was knowledgeable and was enthusiastic about what he was presenting. History of Peru came alive. The virtual tours were "you are there" experiences.

This program was excellent, both as to the subject, Peru and Machu Picchu, and the commentary and visual images presented.

This is an excellent program, both for those who cannot make such a journey or who don't like heights. But I would also recommend it as a great introduction to Peru if you are planning to go there.

John – Class of 2003 | Saratoga, CA
This is a excellent program with insights into Peru with outstanding photography, sights you could not see even in person. I would recommend this program even to those who plan to make the trip in person in the future. The depth of understanding and appreciation was remarkable. The instructor was clear, understandable, and straight forward. I highly recommend the program.

We have taken two Road Scholar online pregrams and they have both been very well done. We learned a lot in both cases. We would highly recommend any Road Scholar programs that you might peak your interest.

Laura – Class of 2013 | Denver, CO
The program was excellent in many ways- instructors, content, organization and flow of the course. I learned a lot and looked forward to every day. My only suggestion would be to have some happy hours or other activities where you could meet other participants. I didn’t have a chance to meet anyone which is one reason I enjoy Road Scholar

I just completed my virtual trip to Machu Picchu. Oscar and Ivonne did an excellent job of presenting a wealth of information in a short period of time. And our group leader, Dario, enthusiastically kept everyone on track. This program is an awesome way to travel from the comfort of your own home. I look forward to taking another virtual trip in the near future. Thank you, Road Scholar, for making all of this possible!

I had a great virtual trip to Machu Picchu. Oscar Oviedo Velasco was a wonderful and engaging instructor, who provided vivid historical and cultural information and insight, as well as leading us on fascinating tours. I recommend that anyone who might be hesitant about taking the trip to Machu Picchu take this virtual tour, as you may learn (as I did) that it would likely not be as physically challenging as I had presumed.

Catherine – Class of 2018 | Ann Arbor, MI
This online adventure - Peru, the Incas and Machu Picchu - was very close to actually being there. The guide, Oscar Velasco, is the best I have ever met. I recommend if you are going to visit Peru, if you have already visited or if you just want to learn. Outstanding!

These experts did not just ‘show’ us Peru. They effectively set the stage for us to ‘feel’ an emotional connection to this amazing country, its people, and its culture.

There was a lot to cover, in such a big country, with such a long history. It was fascinating to learn about the pre-Inca cultures; after all, the Incas did not rule for a long time before the Spanish came. I would have liked to learn more about modern Peru and its culture, and seen more photographs.

When I signed up for this program, I had a mild curiosity about Peru. It didn't take too long into the program for me to add Peru to my bucket list. Oscar and Ivonne's presentations were fascinating and fun, and very well done. Group Leader Dario kept us well informed and was very enthusiastic. The group was engaged and asked great questions. Well done for another EXCELLENT online adventure, because these are truly adventures, not boring lectures.

I highly recommend the Road Scholar online Peru, Cuzco, Machu Picchu program. I actually felt that I was physically there with the EXCELLENT pictures and illustrations presented by the presenters. Their knowledge of the Incan Empire History was exceptional.

The online virtual program to Peru and Machu Picchu was outstanding. If you have ever thought of going, this program is simply the best. The instructor guides - Oscar and Ivonne were extremely knowledgeable and their presentations were FIRST RATE. The three hour time slot went so quickly every day. Dario, the group leader was so friendly and helpful in moving the program along. SIGN UP, SIGN UP, SIGN UP

Margaret – Class of 2017 | Walnut Creek, CA
The program was very well organized, offered a lot of variety and far exceeded my initial expectations for visiting a country from afar. Both the tour guides were clearly passionate about Peru and that passion, pride, knowledge and reverence for all aspects of Peruvian history, culture, politics and all gave us an extra special understanding and appreciation for Peru that we did not previously have. The only thing we'll miss is the photographs we would have brought home! But the talks and tours more than made up for that.

Josephine – Class of 2020 | Mosman NSW, Australia
I zoomed in from Australia so that I could do a virtual journey to Machu Pichu and I have had a wonderful 5 days of 3 hours a day of an immersion course on Peru. Worth the early morning start for me to meet the screens of the 30 participants and our charming facilitator Dario. The handouts were a bonus and the lecturers/tour guides Oscar in Lima for pre history and Ivonne in Cusco for the Inca were excellent not only on their subject but in open mike questions about modern life, politics and food. Thank you Road Scholar for adapting to 2020 and I hope you will consider keeping virtual visits in your future program.
