Orientation. At 2:00 p.m. (ET), our resident expert and Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date schedule and any changes, discuss Zoom meeting protocol and technical instructions, and answer any questions you may have. This Orientation session will last approximately 30 minutes. We’ll then have a lecture (30 minutes) on the history of the Normandy region, from its Viking founders, to the influence of the Norman conquests of England and Sicily. We will look at the influence of the Hundred Years War and learn the fascinating story of Joan of Arc, a symbol of French nationhood and freedom to this day. Our virtual field trip (60 minutes) will begin with a “visit” to the Viking tombs in Rouen’s Cathedral. Next, we’ll visit the Bayeux Cathedral, which was the first home of the Bayeaux Tapestry. The tapestry depicts more than seventy scenes preceeding the Norman conquest of England and is thought to have been embroidered in the 11th century. This magnificent piece of history is now housed in the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in Bayeux. Afterwards, we’ll journey to Mont Saint Michel to learn about the history of pilgrimages, followed by a visit to the market square of Rouen and the city of Caen, William the Conqueror’s capital. We’ll end the day with an open discussion with questions and answers about the history of Normandy.

Our virtual field trip (60 minutes) will take us to the landing beach of Omaha, where we’ll learn about how the beachhead was taken, with great sacrifices from American troops. We’ll also explore Utah Beach, the artificial harbor at Arromanches, Pegasus Bridge, as well as the American Cemetery, which is located in Colleville-sur-Mer and honors the soldiers who gave their lives during World War II. We’ll end the day with an open discussion with questions and answers about the importance of all the locations we visited.

Our lecture (30 minutes) today will focus on Normandy’s importance as a center for painting in the nineteenth century, particularly for the Impressionists. We will learn about Eugène Boudin and his influence on Claude Monet and explore the lifestyle and gastronomy of this unique region. On our virtual field trip (60 minutes), we will visit the beautiful fishing port of Honfleur, a center of Impressionist painting and explore the collections of the museums of Le Havre and Rouen. We will also visit Rouen Cathedral, famously painted in series by Claude Monet. We will also see the cliffs at Etretat, which appear in many Impressionist paintings. Finally, we will visit the house and gardens of Claude Monet at Giverny, in which he lived from 1883 to his death in 1926. Monet’s beautiful gardens often served as inspirations for his renowned works of art. Following our field trip, we’ll end the day with an open discussion (30 minutes) with questions and answers about the importance of Normandy as a center for painting in the nineteenth century.

Our virtual field trip will take us to the traditional fishing port of Honfleur, the cheese making town of Pont l’Évêque and explore local delicacies in specialty shops around the region. Comparing this to your program about Peru, there was more advance program material and the virtual tours of that program were outstanding. You really felt like you were following that guide around the city

This was an entertaining informative session about an area we’ve always heard of, but in a new way. I learned more than I would had I rented a car and gone — the history and unique features. Putting the Normandy invasion in perspective of the then current history and features of the area was very interesting. The program has given me the itch to visit

Excellent program. I learned a great deal from Nettah. He is extremely knowledgeable, presents well, and makes this on-line program enjoyable. If you can’t go to Normandy, let Nettah take you virtually.

If you’ve ever wanted to go to Normandy for any reason, run, don’t walk, to sign up for this totally absorbing and appealing visit. Full of history and vistas. Only thing missing is wonderful meals, the cheeses of the region, a beach breeze now and then. Another great Road Scholar achievement.

This program was a wonderful introduction to the history, art, architecture, customs, food, and people of the entire region of Normandy. The audio visuals used were superb and made me feel like I was there in person. I have wanted to travel to this place for quite some time and completing this program has only made me want to go there even more than before to see these beautiful places and continue to learn about them.

Wonderful instructor; so knowledgeable and personable. I've taken two virtual tours through Road Scholar and I'm now calling them my "Great Escapes." This is the next best thing to being there and a bargain at twice the price!

This virtual tour gives you a very enjoyable introduction to Normandy. Dr Netttah Yoeli-Rimmer is a font of knowledge about Norman history, geography, art, architecture, WWII, agriculture, cuisine, and so much more. However, the subject matter he presented was never overwhelming. The videos he made for the places we "visited" added authenticity to the experience. I actually felt like I was on Omaha Beach and in Monet's house and gardens. A worthwhile experience!

If you wish to travel to Normandy and visit "The Beaches" of D-Day with an expert guide who knows and thoroughly explains the history and is very sensitive to the emotions, then this program is your very best option till real travel is possible. You will feel as if you are there. In addition, you will learn (and see) about the "rest of the story" re Normandy--it's historical beginnings and lovely towns, its rich delicious foods, its Impressionist art and artists, and its unusual and beautiful geography. Treat yourself to an amazing get-away from covid. It is worth every dollar!
