Journey beyond Cape Horn to an icy paradise where penguins and seals are your local welcoming committee. Once you have conquered the storied waters of the Drake Passage, explore volcanic islands and iceberg-filled bays of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands as seasoned naturalists and biologists introduce you to the world’s frozen desert. See the exemplary adaptations by which life thrives in the icy waters and the forces that make Antarctica a frozen wonderland as you embark on Zodiac rides and hikes on snowy beaches where the only tracks are from penguins shuffling to and from their nests.
Activity Level
Keep the Pace
Walking up to two miles at a time over varied terrain including hills, mud, gravel, and ice. Most embarkations and disembarkations will be via Zodiacs requiring the ascent and descent of steep stairs between the Zodiacs and the ship. Zodiac landings will generally entail disembarking onto wet surfaces which may be slippery. Wind and choppy water may result in more turbulent Zodiac transfers.
Best of all, you’ll…
- Get up close to multi-story icebergs to see their blue-green hues reflecting through the ice on Zodiac rides as seabirds glide overhead.
- See and learn about how wildlife — seals, whales, penguins and more — thrive in the frozen Antarctic.
- Marvel at the landscapes of Tierra del Fuego and sample authentic Argentinian cuisine in Ushuaia before embarking on your expedition.
General Notes
Departures operate on different ships, so please see the daily schedule for specific details. The itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions. Road Scholar groups are limited to 30 participants and the ship holds 190 passengers. There could be multiple Road Scholar groups on board.

At sea for the day and night.
Breakfast:
Aboard ship.
Morning:
Today, we will begin a two-day voyage through the Mar de Hoces, better known as the Drake Passage. The Ocean Albatros is at home in this part of the Southern Ocean, known for the unimpeded, never-ending fetch of the winds that encircle the Antarctic. At some point on the second day at sea, we will cross the Antarctic Convergence, a meeting of cold polar water flowing north and warmer sub-Antarctic water moving in the opposite direction. It is the largest biological barrier on earth and is marked by a change in temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels. When we pass this zone, we will have entered the most nutrient-rich waters on earth — the Southern Ocean. The best way to experience wildlife of the Drake Passage is to be on deck keeping a look out.
Lunch:
In the dining room aboard ship, choose what you like from the lunch buffet.
Afternoon:
As we make the passage, we will have time to become acquainted with the ship and frequent the common areas that include the lounge, dining hall, library, and lecture hall where we will meet our guides, ship’s crew, and expedition staff. Everyone is invited to attend lecture and information sessions to learn the extraordinary human and natural history of the Antarctic region. Topics we may hear about include climate change, marine life and the marine ecosystem, birds/wildlife in general, geology and geography, weather systems, and expedition history. What an adventure!!!!!! Nicole, the group leader, is absolutely fabulous!! She totally made sure that all participants were prepared by having a Zoom call for questions and talking about packing -- what to bring/not bring. As a result of this adventure, I'm already thinking about another trip to Antarctica!!! The Albatros Expeditions expedition team on the ship, Ocean Victory, was absolutely fabulous and went above and beyond to ensure that all were included according to their abilities. This was my first time on a ship out in the ocean, and it's given me confidence to do it again. I would highly recommend this adventure!
— Review left March 16, 2024
As the trip continued to progress it was not an uncommon conversation asking how can we even describe it to someone who has never been here. The natural beauty defies definition with its soaring glaciers, blue ice, aqua waters, and wildlife that can never be matched through specials on TV. If you wanted to see the earth as God meant it to be, go to Antartica. We have nothing but postive comments to say about the Ocean Albatros and it's crew. They were amazing and incredibly skilled at all levels. Our leader Dario, was especially committed to us and saw to it we had an experience that matched the splendor we saw. He was a joy to see every day and his enthusiasm was beyond contagious. It needs to be a bucket list for everyone. It will not disappoint and have you leaving wanting more of it.

Had an absolutely wonderful time .. shared the trip with a Texas A&M graduate school friend from 1973-1975 era. It was GREAT.. and with Antarctica, we got our 7th continent!!!

Super excellent. The program exceeded my expectations.
— Review left February 12, 2024
An amazing trip to Antarctica. We originally went to see the animals, but found the stunning glaciers and icebergs being our favorite, memorable part of the trip (can't discount the penguins, wwhich were so great to see).
— Review left December 28, 2023
The Land Ho Iscebers and Penguins in Otherworldly Antarctica was epic. Our Leander Ncole Flores Jara did a fantastic job educationing and guiding us.
My problem is with the misleading and lack of communication between the Road Scholar trip planners and the air travel planners. When looking to select this trip I was informed arrangin early or later departing from Buenos Aires was possible. After commiting to Road Scholar was told this was not true. Let's just say great disappointment because I had planned post trip for showing more of Argentina to my son. Not sure I an recommend useing Road Scholar again.

Had a great time. Can hardly believe we got to explore Antarctica. Our guide, Nicole Flores was fabulous. She was knowledgeable and even presented a lecture for the entire ship. Nicole anticipated and advised our our tour group as well as helped address any issue that came up.

Road Scholar has given me a change to explore, and I will cherish this experience the rest of my life -- it was truly life changing.
— Review left March 10, 2023
The trip was great, mostly due to Albatos Expeditions, the pre-trip customer service was terrible; be prepared to wait on hold or to call numerous times because the promise of a call-back was an empty promise.
— Review left March 1, 2023
The trip was fantastic. On or near the continent was like being in another world. The ship was great.

This was the best RS trip that I have taken (#8). First, our guide Nicole Flores was outstanding, helpful always, very enthusiastic and knowledgable. I appreciated her going the extra miles, starting with a zoom video on what to pack and what to expect. I wish all guides would do that. Then the expeditor crew were not only helpful but came across as if they truly loved their jobs and wanted to share their enthusiasm with us. The crew on the ship were not only helpful and friendly, but always knew our names.

Our group was fortunate to have the best weather possible in Antarctica, and multiple rare animal sightings, we had such talented guides on board the ship, and our Roads Scholar leader prepared us with you tube videos of what to pack and how to prepare. A most Excellent Adventure!

The program was really good, I am better for going and have many new friends. We shared commonalities and differences in a convivial way. We all left as friends sharing our joys and our lives with others.
I weary of the "gospel" of climate change. Yes, it is real but I truly suspicion that draconian behavior on the part of others in the western world will change one thing. Half of the world's population would love to have what the other half enjoys. They will consume it if we allow them the right to join us in enjoyment of the blessings we have-- and consumed on this very trip.

This program was amazing. I loved every special moment of it. Travel is my life blood and I will be smiling at the memories made on this trip for a long, long time.
A dream come true.

This trip to the 7th continent is a journey of a lifetime and an opportunity to visit the 7th continent. The sights and sounds of Antarctica and the wildlife are spectacular, breathtaking and magnificent. The experience is like being on another planet. The cold makes you feel alive. The icebergs are the size of cathedrals. Antarctica is a place of great beauty and wonder. It is a photographers dream. The trip is physically demanding. Despite the almost daily Covid tests and the first day and a half of quarantine on the ship, I highly recommend this amazing journey.
