We will set out to attend a classical musical performance of a renowned local chamber orchestra. Venice played a pivotal role in the evolution of Baroque music during the 17th and 18th centuries, ushering in a new era of musical expression and innovation. In this period, the music shifted from the Renaissance's structured polyphony to a more emotional, dramatic, and ornate style that defined the Baroque period. Venice was the cradle for this transformation, with its churches, opera houses, and orchestras significantly contributing to this musical revolution. Iconic composers such as Antonio Vivaldi, born in Venice, became synonymous with the Baroque style. His works, including the famed "Four Seasons," are representative of Venice's rich Baroque tradition. Furthermore, the city's introduction of public opera houses during this era made music more accessible to the general populace, broadening the influence and reach of Baroque music.

Absolutely marvelous trip. A perfect combination of one of the most striking places on Earth with a well-thought and perfectly delivered educational component. The lectures by Ms. Kristina Gregorin were outstanding in both their content and presentation. The experience would have been incomplete without the knowledge, warmth and that gregarious Italian sense of humor of our leader Laura Gregis. Both my wife and I have been spreading a good word about this program in our respective work places.

Outstanding trip, in large part thanks to Laura(our guide) and Cristina (lecturer, and walking encyclopedia of Venice and Italian history). An unexpected extra was that the Venice Biennale was still going on. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect to say I had attended the Venice Biennale. And if you are a Donna León fan, there is plenty of time to explore Brunetti’s Venice away from the crowds.

Venice - An immersive experience
— Review left April 28, 2024
I took this trip in 2018, so knew some of the venues. I was excite to bring my daughter who hadn't been to Venice. Laura and Christine were great guides, full of info. I liked the Amadeus and its location better than the bonvecchiata from 2018.
We had arrived in Venice several days ahead of the tour andI would have liked it of the tour description had been clearer about what was guided and what was on your own. An example, the ghetto. Christine took us on a very informative tour on the first night of the tour. Not knowing this, we had spent the day in the ghetto on our own. Christine provided much more info and we wouldn't have "done over". The tour of night time San Marco and the velvet factory were just as super the second time around. Laura's suggestion to see the Friari was perfect. What a spot! Also the suggestion to go to the BEST Ice Cream in Venice (also featured in Dona Leon novels) was another winner.
Laura and Christine were super - patient and informative. It might have been helpful to take the group on a quick vaporetto tour (number 1 line) to get oriented. Because this was my fourth trip to Venice, I had a good grip on the geography. And a quick vaporetto ride could have helped. Loved the chocolate ship Vinci Veti (I think). So all in all a good trip for me and my daughter. Bobby and Janina

A unique program in a unique city. With morning lectures and excursions and afternoons usually free, there is a good mix of free time to explore and enriching guided tours. The private evening visit to the Basilica was a highlight.

Everyone loves Venice and this is an opportunity to spend extended time learning more of its history and exploring its various neighborhoods. The program is well designed with a morning lecture then an activity (ie: walking tour, visit to market or artisan) then free time. Just two dinners are included, but there are several “receptions” with snacks. Know that lunches/dinners on your own is not a problem -- there are cafes and restaurants everywhere
I appreciated having the 7 day Museum Pass, Church Pass and Vaparetto (water bus) pass as it helped make good use of free time.
Most of us left Venice wishing we had a few more days here.
Some items that might be helpful:
Wear good walking shoes with thick soles. You don’t want to feel the cobblestones and uneven, sometimes broken pavement
Don’t be afraid to get off the main tourist track and take the side streets to discover and explore new areas. You cannot get too lost in Venice as you will see signs to Rialto, San Marco (main square) or Ferravia (Santa.Lucia train station). From those places it is easy to get your bearings
Travel light -- the airport transfer to/from the hotel is by boat - either the Allaguna (boat makes stops at various places) or private boat. Being on the group transfer is best.
I don’t know if Venice has an shoulder or off season, but if you want fewer crowds, maybe pick a date in late fall, winter or early spring. Summer is high season.
Since it is only a week, this would be a good back-to-back program with another of Italy’s Road Scholar programs in northern Italy. It is easy to get to Venice by train.
It is a great program! in one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
