We will review the up-to-date program schedule, roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Our accommodations in Cuba feature clean, comfortable rooms with private baths and standard amenities. Cuban hotel standards may not equal their American or European counterparts. Improvements are ongoing, and we hope that any potential glitch in service or amenities is a minor trade-off for the authentic connections and enrichment we will experience. Meals will be in paladars: privately owned and operated family restaurants. A reminder: The regulations that govern our program and are set by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Program elements in Cuba are controlled by the Cuban government and are subject to change on short notice; therefore, the daily schedule is a representative guide. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Road Scholar programs include activities intended to strengthen civil society in Cuba. Each day's program promotes independence for the Cuban people and results in meaningful interactions with the Cuban People. Road Scholar programs are carefully crafted to comply with these regulations. All itineraries reflect this emphasis. Visits with independent social projects, religious organizations, and members of civil society are included in every program. Thank you for your understanding. Next, we’ll have a presentation on the new Cuban Constitution. We’ll gain an understanding of the political changes currently taking place in Cuba. We’ll meet members of a local dominoes league, learn the Cuban rules, then play with club members. Teams will rotate and each American will play with one Cuban and an opportunity to openly exchange ideas about events in both of our countries. You will admire the hand-made Domino sets and perhaps even decide to bring one home.

Our trip to Cuba was Epic!! Road Scholar is top notch. This trip definitely took me out of my comfort zone.......and I'm so glad I ventured out! Our trip leaders, our accommodations, our bus driver, our fellow travelers, the lectures, the musicians, the artist, everything was amazing. Thank you Road Scholar for making this a wonderful experience!

The program in Cuba opened my eyes to a country that I knew little about. I have a greater understanding and appreciation of Cuba and the Cuban people.
— Review left November 27, 2024
Beautiful country. Friendly people despite many economic hardships..
Th RS staff were amazingly attentive and friendly.
As a first-time RS participant, this experience is making me eagerly research my second trip.

It was a wonderful trip. Good sights; good leaders; good information as we walked; using whispers was great; good pre-trip materials. Great responsiveness from Carole as I was hesitant about going on the trip with hurricanes and power outages. A few suggestions:
-insurance info is misleading on website, especially highlighting "no reason" cancellation w/o highlighting fact that purchase after final payment doesn't carry that insurance;
-Camillo was great; other 2 were good, but not as good; would be good to have their slides; I'd have more formal talks about public/private economies, government structures/powers, civil rights;
-I'd love to have had sessions (optional) each day with Guillermo and Carole to ask more questions and follow up on each day;
-instead of lengthy descriptions on the bus, a quick email each evening with times and location for the next am and a rough schedule would be more efficient and easier to remember;
-Add Ada Ferrar "Cuba" to the reading list if it's not there already;
-Add more opportunities to interact with Cuban people (talking to members of the modern dance company was fantastic); there weren't many other opportunities;
-shorter meals, especially lunches -- they often took 2+hours which meant less time for exploring
-more suggestions for places to explore during free time -- e.g. Havana Fine Art museum; cemetary, other museums
- more information about how ordinary Cubans live and about who gifts are given to!

This is an excellent trip for anyone who wants to learn more about what life in Cuba is like today, and I would highly recommend it. It was just brief glimpses into the music, art, food, history and culture, but provided so much more information and insight than could be gained by just reading about Cuba. Carlos and Hector were wonderful guides, sharing their different experiences and perspectives on life in Cuba. We had informative talks, visits to a senior center, an art program, dance and music performances and some free time to just explore on our own. The accommodations and the food far exceeded my expectations, but made me aware of how privileged we are as tourists there. I never felt unsafe wandering around Havana as a single woman and found people helpful, friendly and welcoming. The Cuban people are resilient, talented, creative and full of beautiful joy, but struggling with few economic resources, little international support and the impact of the ongoing U.S. embargo. I hope that we in the U.S. can influence our government to establish a more open relationship with our Cuban neighbors in the future.

I just returned from my first Road Scholar program, a tour of Cuba (Cuba Today). I cannot rave enough about the program and the people who ran it. I feel the description of the activity level in the catalog was very accurate. I am looking forward to my next Road Scholar program!

Cuba is beautiful. The city on the outside is not very attractive, but inside the buildings are AMAZING. Also, best music ever, and great people and safe for all.

This was first Road Scholar trip and it will not be the last! This trip to Cuba exceeded all my expectations about learning experiences and was full of fun and inspiring moments every day. I greatly enjoyed the guides, the lecturers and my fellow travelers. I think it is also a great value for all that is offered.
— Review left May 26, 2024
This trip was very well organized: the quality of accommodation, meals, lecturers, programs, guides was all first rate. I have already recommended this trip to several friends and I plan to take another trip with Road Scholar in the future.

A superb introduction to our close neighbor, Cuba. The lectures by Cuban academics addressed the history and politics that keep our countries separate, and the Cuban people who suffer the consequences of isolation. The daily program connected us with Cubans in various walks of life. We visited a day program for seniors and, across the street, a day program for young adults with Down Syndrome. We played the Cuban version of dominoes with experts, and watched performances of music and dance almost every day. The meals were outstanding and the variety of cocktails with exotic fruit, terrific.

If you have ever wondered about life in Cuba, this trip is not to be missed! It was a fascinating learning experience and so much more. Our interactions with artists and others were often moving and gave us a feeling for their lives, passions and challenges. The trip was also great fun - full of music, dancing and the joy of life that is also Cuba!

This was an outstanding experience in all ways. The group leaders and instructors/experts were wonderful, the sites visited were well-chosen and varied, and the cultural experiences included a great combination of dance, music, and art. I learned a lot about Cuba and its people, history, and culture, and had access to so much more than I would have otherwise.
— Review left March 31, 2024
"Cuba Today: Havana, Cienfuegos & Trinidad" was very well organized and had lots of variety. Live music was provided every day, and we watched 2 outstanding dance performances. The Cuban people are going through hard times, but they were all very friendly and wanted to share their culture.

Amazing, fantastic experience! Truly eye-opening. Bev Citron did a great job of keeping us organized & Guillermo is an absolute treasure! Each of the speakers was truly fascinating, providing a wealth of information. I can't believe how many great experiences were crammed into one week. That said...It's Cuba. While the accommodations are lovely & clean, you should not expect all the comforts of staying at a resort in the US. The small inconveniences were completely out-weighed by the valuable & enjoyable experience!

This program was organized and executed so thoughtfully. We directly experienced Cuba's exuberant and creative culture, and the lectures helped us understand how the country's complex history and current economic struggles inform both. Highly recommended!

Our trip to Cuba was wonderful! Bev was a terrific leader who made sure we all understood the future activities, meeting places and times, and the educational reason we were visiting certain sites. Enedis was such a fun assistant leader and translator! She was very aware of each participant and made sure everyone was involved. When we were taken to the airport at the conclusion of the trip, she stayed with everyone until we headed to customs.
That was so helpful for us because she served as the translator as needed!
We were very impressed with the provision of the Whisper listening devices. Upon returning we realized that we never heard anyone in the group complain that they couldn't hear the speaker. That is amazing with a senior group! I will definitely be traveling again with Road Scholar!

This program was amazing! Our in-country guide was knowledgeable and open to our many (many!) questions, and it was fascinating to learn more about the efforts to develop a sustainable uniquely-Cuban socialist/capitalist model.

This tour exceeded my expectations in every way. Our guide, tour director and driver couldn't have been better. They were knowledgeable, kind, caring, considerate and available. The program was fantastic. I don't think it could have been improved upon. The hotels also were so much nicer than expected. The one in Havana is modern with large well appointed rooms.
The one in Trinidad is historic - built in the 1850s but has modern plumging, air conditioning and plenty of hot water. Aside from 2 dinners in the hotels, the lunches and dinners were amazing. It was the best tour I have every taken and I have toured many countries in Asia, Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

Cuba cannot but inspire. If you value gorgeous landscapes and seascapes, vibrant urban street scenes and restaurants, cutting-edge thinking, dance and music, organic farming with comprehensive ecological understanding, state-of-the-art caretaking (the senior center surpassed anything I've seen for low-income seniors in the US, and the Down Syndrome care equalled or surpassed US attempts), and education in the arts that values each individual's trajectory -- and you'd like to feel and understand these deeply in new ways -- you'll find one week there too short yet so stimulating it's enough to go home with, to let the experiences sink in before returning for more.

I loved every minute of our trip to Cuba, even when I got sick. I thought, "Sure, I'm a little nauseous, but at least I'm in Havana!"
To travel with my elderly mother and to be so well cared for by the guides was a joy that I cannot easily express. I am grateful to Road Scholar for providing such an exceptional, life-affirming adventure.

They were quite knowledgeable and accommodating for everyone's needs. The convertible car rides were awesome! the food and restaurants were 5 Star. The music and dancing was a true representation of the Cuban spirit. The citizens of Cuba were very friendly. I enjoyed the cultural presentations and touring the cities. Our hotels were very comfortable. I am telling my family and friends to visit Cuba with Road Scholar. It is a wonderful and enlightening experience. Well worth the trip.

Cuba Today... This is what Road Scholar was made for. Education and helping the people who live there. I loved the choices for instructors and I loved who the Road Scholar chose for us to contribute to. This is a very well organized and impactful trip. I've been on 9 road scholar trips so far and the Cuba was my favorite. I could go on and on telling you why its my favorite.. BUT you should experience it yourself.

This visit to Cuba was unlike any other trip I've taken through Road Scholar or with any other travel company. Our guides, one American and one native Cuban were terrific. The most unusual part of the trip was the up close interaction with people. We met so many artists and performers and regular everyday people, too. And when we patronized their small businesses, it felt like we were actually making a difference in their lives. Visiting Cuba really changes your outlook. You might think you know something about Cuba but visiting changes your perspective. I have never had as many people ask about the details of a trip like I have had with this one, and, as of today, I've been home less than a week!

A trip to Cuban has always been one of the places I have wanted to travel. By supporting the Cuban people on this trip, it made it even more worthwhile. If you can make it to Cuba in 2020 it's probably well worth the effort. During 2017-2018 there was a relaxation of travel restrictions for US citizens and this led to a huge increase in US tourists, clogging up hotels and other services. By 2019 restrictions were put in place again, but in the long run those restrictions don't make any sense, so at some point soon you'll have the same glut of tourists. This will change Cuba. Hopefully the lives of the Cuban people will improve, but if you want to see one of the last civilized places on Earth with no advertising, almost no cell phones, a vibrant culture and a beautiful people then find your way to Cuba soon!

Priceless insights into the history, culture, geography, and economy of Cuba. Priceless also to learn about the blind-natured and cruel trade-and-supplies embargo/blockade that the US maintains against Cuba: all Americans need to know about this and demand that it be ended. I was also delighted to be in a socialist and gun-free country where the views align so well with my own. It was absolutely wonderful to see the benefits of a compassionate, intelligent socialist system of government and see how Fidel and Che are still beloved there. The many conversations with artists, dancers, musicians, fishermen, and others whom we met were so valuable. All the local guides and teachers were superb. I was filled with admiration for all of them, and especially for Hector, who was with us the entire week and who was ideal in his position in all ways. Bravo, Road Scholar, for enabling this trip!
