This was a bucket list trip, I have always wanted to go to Cuba. I packed carefully, taking nothing I expected to return home with... at each stop, I left part of what I had with me. I filled up my suitcase with local made treasures. Best decision ever. The people were amazing. I felt safe the entire trip. It was a five star dining experience (which I did NOT expect). There are definitely cultural differences, they have infrastructure that was frozen in time. I highly recommend this trip for anyone interested in understanding the Cuban/American political climate. Keep your mind open to both sides. As a resident of South Florida, I definitely listen to American politics differently than before this trip. Oh and did I mention the scenery is spectacular! Beaches, mountains, farms still using oxen, cityscapes and yes, the old cars still run. But the people were the best... even though we both spoke few words of the other person's language, I will always remember the animated conversation with a young dancer and see the happiness on her face.

Traveling to Cuba in the middle of an embargo, a drought, and the resulting economic hardships is not for the faint of heart, but Road Scholar made it doable and even very enjoyable--not to mention of course informative and life-expanding. The tour leaders were fantastic and the itinerary was a great mix of locations and experiences.

I highly recommend this trip to anyone. I gained an insight, appreciation and empathy that I could never have achieved from books. I will always carry the music, art and warm smiles of the Cuban people with me. I want to learn more and would love to return.

If you have ever wanted to visit Cuba, this is a fine choice.Cuba has weathered so many hardships and setbacks in their road to independence and yet the people remain resilient and joyful. Their art, music, and dance reflect the soul of the nation and Road Scholar puts you in contact with them, one-on-one to understand their life on their terms. With RS, you are a participant, not simply an observer and that is the true value of this program.

Our trip to Cuba was terrific! We learned so much about Cuban history, art, culture, and society. We ate well, heard great music, saw amazing dancers, met and saw fabulous artists and artwork. Overall, it was just wonderful.

My wife and I did the best of Cuba trip recently. It was a great trip very enlightening. We learned a lot about the people and culture of Cuba. The group leaders, Jim and Elias were amazing. They both went above and beyond every day to make sure everyone had a great trip. Cuba felt like a very safe country. The people were very friendly. I highly recommend this trip for anyone looking for a unique travel opportunity close to home.

Everyone should experience a visit to Cuba. It's a beautiful country with welcoming people. I learned so much about Cuba due to our wonderful leader, Betty, and guide, Jose Luis. Expect to be out of your comfort zone - heat and blackouts. The art, music, and dance were excellent.

I really loved this trip - lots of variety in what we did and saw. Great people. Great guides.

Fascinating Cuba - pack your curiosity and flexibility
We were extremely fortunate to have Jose Luis Sande as our tour guide throughout the trip. As promised, the tour highlighted the arts/artists, and we thoroughly enjoyed each opportunity for interaction - especially the music! Bring your patience, bug spray, and flash lights. Strongly recommend Cuba: An American History as pre-trip reading.

The Havana hotel was first class and the restaurant choices ample and of good quality. That was less true in other places. I was especially displeased with the Hotel Rio San Juan in Mantanzas where my room was on the 2nd floor. I had difficulty on the stairs as the hand rail only went from the 1st floor to the landing half way up. I had to hold on to the wall for support the rest of the way. My shower leaked so there was a lot of water on the floor after each use. On the last day, the plumbing actually came apart while I was showering resulting in water shooting directly out of the wall at my mid-section leaving the plumbing to the shower head useless. All of this was made worse by the slippery tile floor in the bathroom and shower and the lack of a grab bar or anything to hold on to for support while on that slippery floor. Slippery tile floors and the lack of grab bars was also true of all the other hotels as well, even in Havana. However, although the Air B&B in Vinales also had tile floors in the bathroom and shower, they at least had a small mat on the shower floor to reduce the risk of slipping on the wet floor.
The printed material sent in advance was very helpful; I read and re-read every word. The guides on the tour, Jim Fitch and Jose Luis Sande, were excellent. My only issue was the lack of detail of each day’s agenda. I understand that the materials sent in advance had to be somewhat general as the situation on the ground determines the actual venues to tour on any given day. However, one day Jim hand-wrote the agenda for that day and distributed it electronically. So why can’t that be done every day? My issue is that I don’t know the names of the places we visited or of the artists whose works we saw. The names were announced out loud as we were visiting each site but were not printed anywhere. As I look at my photos of a great artist whose studio we visited, I have no idea of that artist's name. Knowing only the name of the city is not enough.

This was a fascinating tour. Well-paced, with lots of variety and a good balance of planned activities and free time, it leaves the traveler with more questions than answers, in a good way. We learned much and have more yet to learn about Cuba!
Our tour leader, the hardworking Betty van der Kaaj, has the perfect personality for her job, remaining calm and gracious whenever challenges arose. In addition, we found her to be knowledgeable and a clear communicator. Even more importantly, her personal connection to the Cuban people we visited greatly enhanced our experience.
Our Cuban guide, Alejandro Anido was very knowledgeable and led us with skill. He was occasionally difficult to understand, as when speaking over a person for whom he was translating, but we very much appreciated his sharing of personal experiences and perspectives to shed light on the problems facing Cuba today.
Our bus driver, Etienne, was excellent. He was very professional and became an important and much-appreciated member of our group.
Some participants in our group presented special challenges for Betty, Alejandro, and Etienne, but the team handled those situations with utmost professionalism and grace.
All of the accommodations and meal venues were well-chosen for our group.
The pre-trip information would have benefitted from a thorough review both by the tour leader and by an editor. There were a number of content and copy-and-paste errors that made for confusing reading.
As for the recommendations for carrying U.S. cash, the total amount recommended was appropriate, but we would have benefitted from knowing that each participant needs some 30-50 one-dollar bills, many 5s and 10s for souvenir shopping, and larger bills only for the meals not included and in case of emergency.
Overall, we felt well-prepared for the trip and enjoyed it tremendously.

Spectacular program fulfilled a long held goal to visit Cuba and learn about how the people live in both the city and the countryside. I came way enamored with the Cuban people and wondering how I might return to Matanzas for a longer visit. If you’re a traveler and interested in foreign affairs, this program is your top choice!

I did not know what to expect on this trip. Jim the leader was the best one I had experienced, spoke the right words at right time plus kind and the patience to the special needs people.
Believe or not I do have some of the group in my head particularly the couples. When the radio comes out with any Cuba subject brings me special attention now.
It was an eye open trip to experience what the situation in Cuba.

The Best of Cuba: From Viñales Valley to Habana Vieja, presents a unique experience. From the decaying elegance of old Havana to the horse-drawn economy of the rural towns, Cuba presents an example of how people can be friendly and happy in spite of a shortage in the material and electronic "necessities" we have become so used to. Roads Scholar kept us in comfort while giving us a window into the lives of the Cuban people (with occasional doorways to join with them in music, dance and conversation). Our trip leader, Carole, was masterful in both meeting the individual needs of the group members and demonstrating true friendship with the Cuban people at every one of our visited venues.

Highly highly recommend this trip for those curious about Cuba and its people. The trip leaders were 5-star and the up-close encounters with artists and their arts were nothing short of magical. I'm so glad I went and I've returned wanting to know more about the Cuban people and their society. Viva Cuba!

My first Road Scholar trip but it exceeded my expectations.
The guide, the Cuban host and the bus driver all contributed to my enjoyment of this trip.

This was one of our best Road Scholar trips. Our guides, Betty, Hector and Wilmer, were fantastic. It was wonderful to see how the Cubans have adapted to all their tribulations with lack of just about everything, but the art was so wonderful, the places we visited so wonderful and the food they fed us was very good. It was sad to see that the Cubans didn't eat quite so well. Anyway, that said, it was a great trip!

I loved the experience of stay in the houses of native Cubans.
Would love to have deeper interpersonal conversations with home owners.
Unfortunately they were too busy with housekeeping duties.

A fascinating view, warts and all, of our beautiful, friendly and harmless neighbor. With the exception of the stunning Vinales Valley, it was not our most scenic Road Scholar trip but definitely the most thought provoking.
— Review left December 18, 2023
The Cuba program was definitely a learning experience. I would recommend it, However, remember that you are going to Cuba, a depressed socialist country. If this is your first Road Scholar program, know that your following programs will certainly have better food and accommodations. If this is one of many RS programs, as with me, set your expectations lower and you will avoid disillusionment. Once again, this was a trip worth taking to understand life under socialism. It may well change your view of the world.

A truly eye-opening experience to see such a “foreign” country so near to our own borders. To realize that Cuba is a great experiment which, if allowed to flourish, could teach us all about other possibilities and ways of being..ie, a more socially even society where there is little evidence of the “haves” and “have-nots.

We had been wanting to visit Cuba since before the pandemic, and it was worth the wait. Go now! Road Scholar does it right! Superb guides Carole Cloonan and Elias Valor - kept things organized and taught us a lot. Sure, you will find toilets without seats (or TP), but it's not a big deal. Internet is a challenge, but you deal with it. The Cuban people are warm and friendly, and you have enough time to interact with many of them. The activities are varied, and you learn something new every single day. The food is okay, and I didn't lose weight even though there were some meals that didn't particularly appeal to me. We kept a blog that chronicles our trip, and anyone can read it: MytripjournalDOTcomSLASH Lois_and_John_Cuba

I did not get to see Cuba at all due to the spread of Covid by other passengers. Based on the fact that previous Cuba trips had multiple participants with Covid, Road Scholar should have required all to mask when inside buildings and on the tour bus.
To quarantine people without active symptoms for the duration of the trip was outrageous! The hotel in Havanna that was used for quarantine was not prepared for meal room service and I had stale bread and butter for most of the days! After the group saw the quarantine requirement, others with symptoms just laid low and did NOT test!
I would like RS to consider a refund of the cost of this wasted trip in the way of a credit toward a future trip. This was my 4th RS trip and I have another scheduled in May. Depending on how RS handles this will determine my willingness to continue traveling with this company.

This 12 day program to Cuba more than surpassed my (always very high) expectations of a Road Scholar trip. I not only came home with a much better understanding of Cuba and how our US policy affects Cuban society, but also a sense of how many challenges the people of Cuba handle with dignity while maintaining pride in their culture. If you want an insight into today’s Cuba and our connection to it, then this is the trip you want to take.
Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Matanzas, and Vinales are all beautiful, historic, and amazing places to visit. The time spent in the Viñales countryside and our Casa Particular there was my personal favorite, a perfect respite from the busy cities on the rest of the trip. Our US tour leader Carole was unflappable and so kind, and our incredible Cuban tour guide Elias was extraordinarily knowledgeable, funny, and just delightful to be around, even while answering all of our many questions!
The two Cuban lecturers’ presentations on women in Cuban society and the Cuban constitution and private enterprise in Cuba today gave us perspectives that were honest and sincere in their evaluation of the problems and solutions facing the country and the people. Cuba has changed a lot since the 1960’s and a visit there has changed my perception about it too.

I came home with a joyful heart. This program allowed me to do what I love to do most; that is engage with every-day people in another country. It was thrilling to engage with artists, dancers, musicians, and even hotel chambermaids and bartenders to understand how they live. While some of the days on the bus were long it was also opportunity to see the beautiful landscape. It was good to have been in several places ranging from the city to rural areas. I came home with a much better understanding of Cuba and how US policy affects their lives. I am left wondering how after 60 years and six administrations we have not yet come to a better way of being kind and supportive to our next door neighbors who are indeed suffering. If you want to get a better understanding of Cuba and our relationship with it, then this is the program for you.

I recently completed a 11 day Road Scholar program in Cuba. The experience was nearly life altering, maybe a bit old for that, but still energized me to realize again and again that underdeveloped and developing countries are experiencing continued and maybe worsening hard times, and to see a country being made to suffer for political reasons is unacceptable and undemocratic. It is time the US removes all restrictions on trade and travel and life will be better. 60 years of stubbornness is silliness. Paul van zuiden

Road Scholar continues to be a primary source for my learning more about the world, it's people, and fellow travelers who always strive to dispel the ugly Americans image. My trips with Road Scholar are much more than a 'vacation' as the information and experiences remain with me for years. Can't wait until my next trip. Adrienne Kirschner,

I considered a shorter trip to Cuba through Road Scholar, but I am happy I chose a longer trip. Cuba is a fascinating country and to appreciate the people and their way of life a longer trip is necessary to more fully understand Cuba; it's more complicated than one might imagine.

This is a perfect trip. I learned so much and I’m still processing all the information I received.
Our US guide Cheryl Sennet, our Cuban guide Vivian Quintero, and our bus driver Heriberto were excellent and over the top. They are very approachable, super friendly, fun, knowledgeable, and ran the trip smoothly without a single glitch.
Cuba is an amazing country. While the people of Cuba face many challenges, they are some of the friendliest people I have ever met.
The arts, history, scenery, culture and cuisine of Cuba are amazing. Havana, Trinidad, Matanzas, and Vinales are beautiful.
It was nice to stay in a variety of hotels and private accommodations.
I enjoyed the opportunities to speak Spanish. Every day my Spanish improved. It was fun for me to interact with the Cuban people in Spanish and for them to interact with me in English. Learning experiences for all.
Cuba is a MUST SEE. I am fortunate to have been able to do this trip. I highly recommend it and I wouldn’t change a thing about the trip.
I look forward to future trips to Cuba.

My second Road Scholar trip to Cuba, and this was as good as the first! We spent time in Havana,, Trinidad, Matanzas, and Vinales, visited a variety of lovely and interesting sites, talked to artists of all stripes as well as regular Cuban folks, heard two meaty lectures, saw fabulous music and dance performances, ate good food everywhere, stayed at large hotels as well as small private B&Bs, and enjoyed welcome drinks and live music almost everywhere we went! Our guides, Betty and Jose, were fabulous. A wonderful way to experience and learn about a country that few of us Americans know much about. Highly recommended!

We just returned from our First Road Scholar Adventure, The Best of Cuba (22143) . We loved it. It was just the right length of time, you get to see many aspects of Cuban life from small towns, country sides, to Havana. The food was good, somewhat repetitive but always tasty. The fellow Road Scholars were all interesting and knowledgeable. It made for a very rich experience. We will do another trip!!

“The Best of Cuba” program delivered through the cities we visited, the people we met, and the wonderful cultural organizations we experienced. What made the trip exceptional were our talented and upbeat group leader Michelle, our knowledgeable Cuban guide Karina, and our expert coach driver Hector. Group participants were flexible and open to new experiences, and a fun group of individuals. For me, this was a life-changing event which I will long remember.
— Review left February 20, 2020
Wonderful culturally rich trip with a great leader (Michelle) and Cuban guide (Karina), as well as a fun group of participants. We learned so much about the Cuban people and their lives. Most hotels were fine to very good, although the one in Trinidad was way too "rustic" for me. The food was fine and plentiful with great coffee. If you have stomach issues, however, think twice about Cuba; 5-6 people that I am aware of in our group had varying degrees of problems despite constant hand washing, sanitizing, and food/drink vigilance. That said, it was a great trip!

Our arts and culture tour of Cuba was outstanding for its content and logistically seamless (as much as is possible there). We learned so much about the arts, the economy, politics, and daily life in Cuba — more than we ever could have learned traveling on our own, without a personal connection to a Cuban. And we felt welcomed, certainly for our contributions to their struggling economy, but also because they are genuinely friendly people who love to share their culture with us. This was our first Road Scholar experience, and I’d highly recommend this trip.

The trip was a truly learning experience. People there were poor but happy and healthy. Many nice buildings were desperately needed repaired. Consumer goods were very, very scarce due to U.S. embargo.
Many family own homes were converted to hotels and restaurants and doing very good and getting rich. At the same time, most of the people till live in poverty.
Our tour leader did a great job. Most but not all the local guides were great. Hotels and food were o.k. I was very disappointed with three things.
1. The time of returning to Miami was never made clear. I ended up booked a flight back home in early evening such that I had to waited for over seven hours at the Miami airport. This had never happened when I traveled with other tour companies.
2. Rotation in seating was voluntary but did not worked out as expected.
3. Many travelers were sick and several of them were coughing openly on the bus regularly without covering up themselves. I ended up sick when I got back home.
Overall it was a great learning and discovering trip.

The Best of Cuba, from Camaguey to Havana was excellent. Our guides, Betty and Elias were professional and knowledgeable but also caring and kind. The pace was busy but not daunting. We saw a variety of facets of life from artists, dancers, farmers, to ordinary people it really gave us a feel for the country and its incredible people. The guides asked what we wanted to see and tried very hard to make sure we had opportunities to experience those things if they were already on the schedule. Food was great at the paladas. Hotels were clean and in convenient locations to walk around on your own. WiFi was available in Camaguey and Havana. Excellent trip.

Excellent opportunity to meet and converse with people in their usual work or home setting. The Cuban people were very friendly and generous. I detected no animosity whatsoever toward Americans. Our group leader, Jim Fitch, in-country “instructor”, Elias Valor, and bus driver, Gil, were all excellent. We learned a great deal from them and they did all that was needed to make the trip comfortable and safe. The accommodations were all excellent; probably the DoubleTree in Miami, in terms of lodging and food, were the least desirable.
The pace and choice of activities were very good. We understand that limitations under “travel in support of the people of Cuba” may have restricted us somewhat but we feel that meeting artists, farmers, cultural performers and some businesspeople was excellent. The visits to homes were high points and there could be more visits to typical homes such as Ernesto and Jamie in Remedios and the paladar in a home in Remedios. We would recommend this trip to others without reservation.

The Cuba trip is absolutely fascinating - in some ways it's a trip back in time. It's an opportunity to meet the people of Cuba, to experience the art, the history, the music, and to learn how Cubans adjust to difficult circumstances. The guides are wonderful and very knowledgeable. On our January trip, the weather ranged from mild to cool, no problem with insects, and the accommodations were comfortable. The food is ample (although not gourmet) and the drinks, including coffee, are superb.

The Best of Cuba: People, Life & Culture. This was a great trip: informative, fun and an opportunity I would have never otherwise had. (It's illegal to visit Cuba as an individual.) We traveled several of the great cities of Cuba: Camaguey, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Remedios, Havana & others. All were beautiful, photogenic, and interesting in their own ways. As always, the leaders were great! They helped us to meet all kinds of Cuban people, to see their art & culture, and to participate in many of these. Perhaps the thing I enjoyed most was my fellow travelers. As with every RoadScholar trip I have participated in (this was my 4th RoadScholar trip), I found them to be fun loving, adventurous, well informed and to have a good sense of humor!

Considering the hardship conditions of some areas, the trip was an educational experience. My complaint was the one night stay outside of Trinidad, in the rustic cabins. The food was awful, the rooms were, rustic, yes. But, we really didn't need to stay in such an out of the way location. Not a learning experience. Loved our guide, Jim. Loved the surprise taxi ride in Havana, the pedicabs in Remedios, the trip to Hemingway's estate in Havana, and the best meal was the farm field trip with roasted pig. Food was fresh, colorful and delish. Can't say that for most of the meals, but under the circumstances, I understand.
Glad I went. Once was enough for me.

The group leader and guides were outstanding and the people whom we met in our People to People contacts were exceptionally warm, welcoming and forthcoming. My fellow travelers were interesting and eager to experience all the trip offered. I am very glad that I have gained a much better understanding of Cuba and the desire to urge our public officials to re-open diplomatic and trade relations which were once very close. This, my first Road Scholar experience, and only my second group travel experience in the past 35 years, has set the bar so very high for future travel that I wonder any can top it. Our guides, Julie and Elias, were attentive, informative, inventive, hilarious at times, and overall, amazing. It is a tribute to Road Scholar that such high caliber guides continue to be available to lead their Cuba adventures. And our driver, George, squeezed the bus down narrow streets with skilled precision. When I look back on the variety, relaxed timing and organization of the experiences to which we were introduced on this trip, I think of the word "cadence." The visits to artist studios, ballet and modern dance companies, the acapella chorus, the farm, the children's art project, the private church & museum tours, the Cuban dominoes club, the paladar meals and proprietor discussions, the introductory lectures on Cuban music and Cuban-US relations by University professors, the chance to interact with dancers, doctors, artists, musicians, proprietors of a Cuban B&B, a grocery store for locals, plus the bicitaxis and all out FUN of this trip, contributed to an awesome experience. Best of all, our group itself was cohesive, congenial, helpful to each other, and made me, as a solo traveler, feel that I was part of a group of friends, not at all solo. If you have been considering a trip to Cuba, this is the one.

A truly educational experience in a country that is often heard about in the US, usually from a politcally standpoint. It was enlightening to hear directly from the locals in Cuba itself the other side of the story and how they really live under a somewhat different form of government. It makas one reflect on the pros and cons of both system.

My group tour of Cuba was fantastic! We spent time in small towns and drove through rural countryside, ending in the beautiful city of Havana, and met many very creative and interesting locals, and left with a broader view of the cultural and political situation in this fascinating country. I was pleased to discover that the citizens are typically happy to have Americans visit and are proud of their culture. But be vigilant about hand washing or sanitizing, and do not ever trust the tap water wherever you stay or eat in Cuba. I, along with about five others in my tour group ended up with some degree of stomach trouble, not knowing how or where we acquired the bug. According to the ER doctor I saw a week after returning to the states, a good rule of thumb when traveling anywhere in the Caribbean is “boil it, peel it, cook it, wash it or forget it!” (But only “wash it” with bottled water.)
