Southern Africa Birding Safari: From Zimbabwe to Zambia & Beyond
Program Number: 21528
Long Walk to Freedom
An unpretentious tale of an extraordinary life. Mandela recounts the circumstances of his imprisonment and ultimately his successful drive to end Apartheid.
Birds of Southern Africa: The Complete Photographic Guide
This brand new photographic field guide to the birds of southern Africa presents more than 2,500 images showing a wide selection of age and sex plumage variations, perched and in-flight birds, and color morphs where relevant, making it the most comprehensive collection of bird photographs of the region ever produced in a single volume.
Accompanying text focuses on identification, call, status, breeding details and diet. Also included for each species is a distribution map and a calendar bar indicating occurrence and breeding months.
About the author: IAN SINCLAIR is renowned in African birding circles for his field knowledge and expertise in identifying the region's many bird species. His vast experience has been gained in expeditions to every corner of Africa, as well as to the Himalayas, Antarctica and Marion Island. He has authored or co-authored several successful bird books, including the hugely successful Field Guide to Birds of SA and the equally successful Birds of Southern Africa.
Silent Thunder, In the Presence of Elephants
In this memoir, Katy Payne relates stories of research, discovery and conservation in Africa. An acoustic biologist, Payne has worked on communication among elephant populations at Amboseli National Park, Etosha and Sengwa.
SASOL Birds of Southern Africa
An excellent all round bird field guide for southern Africa. This comprehensively revised edition ensures up-to-the-minute information, latest taxonomy and an advanced technique for improved field identification. A checklist corresponding to this field guide will be provided at the beginning of the program.
Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood
A worthy heir to Isak Dinesen and Beryl Markham, Alexandra Fuller remembers her African childhood with candor and sensitivity. Though it is a diary of an unruly life in an often inhospitable place, it is suffused with Fuller's endearing ability to find laughter, even when there is little to celebrate. Fuller's debut is unsentimental and unflinching but always captivating. In wry and sometimes hilarious prose, she stares down disaster and looks back with rage and love at the life of an extraordinary family in an extraordinary time.
The Big Conservation Lie
This book takes the reader through Kenya’s conservation ‘industry’ and the players therein with all their prejudices, weaknesses and commitment to causes. It is a call to indigenous Africans to claim their place at the table where the management of their natural resources is being discussed, and invites well-meaning donors to look beyond the romantic images and detect the possible role of their money in the disenfranchisement of a people.
Africa Is Not a Country: Notes on a Bright Continent
So often, Africa has been depicted simplistically as a uniform land of famines and safaris, poverty and strife, stripped of all nuance. This book offers stories that bring to life Africa’s rich diversity, communities, and histories.
Southern Africa Wildlife, A Visitor's Guide
A popular, photographic guide to the mammals, birds, reptiles and habitats south of the Zambezi. With 300 color photographs and illuminating text.
Out of Darkness, Shining Light
So begins Petina Gappah's powerful novel of exploration and adventure in nineteenth-century Africa—the captivating story of the loyal men and women who carried explorer and missionary Dr. Livingstone's body, his papers and maps, fifteen hundred miles across the continent of Africa, so his remains could be returned home to England and his work preserved there.
Glory
Award-winning author follows the fall of the Old Horse, the long-serving leader of a fictional country, and the drama that follows for a nation of animals on the path to true liberation. Inspired by the unexpected fall by coup in 2017 of Robert G. Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s president of nearly four decades, Glory shows a country's imploding, narrated by a chorus of animal voices.

Birding near Johannesburg
Location:
Johannesburg
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
City Lodge Hotel Eastgate
Activity Note
The birding today is done on foot; total distance covered may be up to 2 miles on paved walkways. Total driving approx. 90 miles; about 2 hours.
Breakfast:
Taken at the hotel, breakfast will be an expansive buffet featuring a variety of cold cereals, fresh fruit, cold meats and cheeses, pastries and hot items such as bacon, sausage, tomatoes and mushrooms. Omelettes, eggs and waffles can be cooked on demand. Fruit juices, coffee, tea, milk and water provided.
Morning:
Transfer by motorcoach east of Johannesburg to the Marievale Bird Sanctuary, a provincial nature reserve that has been designated an Important Bird Area in South Africa. Marievale has been shaped by the gold mining activities in the area; much of the water that fills the floodplain has been pumped up from underground, creating a body of water that attracts an extraordinary number of birds. Habitats within the sanctuary include shallow open water, reedbeds and grassland, so the variety of birds is impressive with some 280 species having been recorded in the area. Here one can often see specials like little bittern, slaty egrets, black and squacco herons, and handsome red-knobbed coots along with the usual aquatic species such as African rails, crakes, moorhens, cormorants and snipes. Additionally, it may well be the only place in the Gauteng region where it is relatively easy to see fulvous duck and South African shelduck. The wetland sanctuary does have a history of attracting extremely rare vagrants, with past sightings including buff-spotted flufftails, buff-breasted sandpiper, and a black-tailed godwit. In the company of our Group Leader, we will bird the varied environments in Marievale.
Lunch:
In Marievale, we’ll find a nice spot to enjoy our boxed lunches with bottled water.
Afternoon:
We’ll continue birding in Marievale. In the mid-afternoon, we will return to the hotel with some time to relax before dinner.
Dinner:
At the hotel.
Evening:
At leisure.

Fly to Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls - Zimbabwean Side
Location:
Victoria Falls
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
Ilala Lodge
Activity Note
Flight time is 1 hour 40 minutes. Drive time from the airport to the lodge approx. 20 minutes; 13 miles. In order to see all viewpoints at the Falls, approximate length of walk is 2 miles on paved paths. It is possible to walk less and see some, but not all, viewpoints. Paths may be slick from mist, but are mostly flat.
Breakfast:
At the hotel.
Morning:
This morning, we will board our minibus and transfer to the Johannesburg airport to board our commercial flight to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
Lunch:
Lunch provided in flight.
Afternoon:
Arrive Victoria Falls where we will clear customs and immigration; please be advised that long lines at Victoria Falls airport can sometimes cause delays while obtaining a visa. After clearing Zimbabwean immigration, we will be transferred to the lodge for check-in. Later this afternoon, we will visit Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwean side. Because the waterfall spans the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, it is visible from both countries. However, viewing from the Zimbabwean side is preferred as more of the waterfall falls on this side. Here, our Group Leader will lead us on a walk to the various viewpoints and show us how, through the millennia, the forces of nature have created this marvelous spectacle, Africa’s greatest waterfall. After viewing the Falls, we will return to the lodge in our minibus.
Dinner:
At a nearby restaurant in Victoria Falls, we will have a buffet meal featuring traditional Zimbabwean dishes, plus water, tea and coffee. As we interact with our hosts, we’ll learn about local ingredients and cooking traditions in this part of Zimbabwe. Other beverages are available for purchase.
Evening:
At leisure.
Day
5
Birding Drive, Local Community Visit, Wildlife Trust
Location:
Victoria Falls
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
Ilala Lodge
Activity Note
Birding drive lasts approx. 4 hours. Total transfer time approx. 1.5 hour round-trip; approx. 20 miles. Minimal walking at the community visit, dirt paths. Periods of standing at the community visit and Trust.
Breakfast:

Morning:
We will start at sunrise for a birding-focused drive to several local hot spots in the Victoria Falls area. In open-air, 4x4 safari vehicles, we will start in town, driving along the Zambezi River and stopping at the golf course, as well as the water treatment plant; at both locations, we will have a chance to get out of the vehicle and walk a short distance searching for birds. Our drive will continue into the eastern side of Zambezi National Park, moving slowly through prime areas for birding from the vehicle. Species sighted today may include the black eagle, African skimmer, Taita falcon and half-collared kingfisher. Big game animals such as elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, waterbuck and sable antelope may also be spotted inside the park. We will return to the lodge in the late morning before departing for lunch.
Lunch:
Taken at a local restaurant with scenic views, our lunch will be a 2-course, plated, set menu offering; bottled water included with additional beverages available for purchase.
Afternoon:
Following lunch, we will reboard our minibus for a short drive to a community project in Victoria Falls; visits to these projects are done on a non-commercialized, authentic and interactive basis with a view to a genuine and meaningful interaction. Then, we will visit the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, where we will learn about how the Trust’s local conservation efforts are making a major impact in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA). The Trust has four main areas of operation: Rescue and Rehabilitation; Wildlife Research; Wildlife Disease and Forensics Laboratory; and Community Outreach. In the company of a local expert, our visit will incorporate an overview of the Trust and its facilities, including the wildlife rehabilitation area. At the end of our visit, we will re-board our minibus and return to the lodge. Prior to dinner at the lodge, our Group Leader will provide an overview on Zimbabwe.
Dinner:
Our dinner will be taken in the lodge’s restaurant and consist of a 3-course, set menu meal including bottled water, coffee, tea; additional beverages available for purchase.

David Livingstone, To Hwange National Park
Location:
Hwange National Park
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
Khulu Bush Camp
Activity Note
Transfer time to Hwange National Park is 3 hours, 115 miles, done in an enclosed minibus. Safari drive lasts 3-4 hours in open-air 4x4 vehicle.
Breakfast:
At the lodge.
Morning:
Following breakfast, a noted local historian will discuss the story of Scottish explorer Dr. David Livingstone, who first visited Victoria Falls over 150 years ago, and whose journeys laid the groundwork for the Colonial era that followed. Mid-morning, after checking out of the lodge, we will board our minibus and head south to Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s premier safari destination. Hwange is legendary for its wonderful array of wildlife, particularly the massive herds of elephant and buffalo. In the summer months, large antelope herds migrate onto the plains, closely followed by large predators. Shallow pans are spread throughout the park, around which wildlife congregate, making for excellent and reliable game viewing. Elephant, Cape buffalo, sable, roan, southern giraffe, blue wildebeest, impala and sometimes even gemsbok (oryx) can be seen here. This park is one of the best for predators - lion, leopard, wild dog and cheetah are regularly sighted, along with the smaller African wildcat, serval, honey badger, civet and spotted hyena. Bird life in the area is also prolific, with more than 400 species found.
Lunch:
At the camp, we’ll have a buffet lunch with a starter, main dish, side dish, and dessert. All local brand alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, water and coffee/tea provided; premium brand alcohol available for purchase.
Afternoon:
The early afternoon will be at leisure to rest during the heat of the day. Following afternoon tea, we will depart on our game drive. Game drives will be in open-air safari vehicles in the early mornings and late afternoons, when the animals and birds are most active. Each game drive lasts for approximately three hours, with a rest break half-way through. Game drives consist of moving slowly through the park searching for birds, predators and other animals. During the game drive, we will search for a variety of bird species including the Kalahari robin, lilac-breasted roller, ground hornbill, eastern red-footed kestrel, Lanner falcon, hobby falcon, and the Steppe eagle, which migrates to southern Africa all the way from the Central Asian steppes.
Dinner:
Dinners at the camp will be plated meals consisting of a salad or starter, main course with side, and dessert. All local brand alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, water and coffee/tea provided; premium brand alcohol available for purchase.
Evening:
Following dinner, we’ll set out on a short night game drive with a local safari expert in search of the nocturnal species active in the area. Some species we could spot may include civet, genet, bushbaby, pearl spotted owl, African scops owl, and Verreaux’s eagle-owl.

Activity Note
Flight time 30 minutes. Transfer time to Chobe National Park is 2 hours including border crossing; 65 miles; transfer done by minibus then 4x4 vehicle. Game drive lasts 1.5 hours. Transfer from national park to lodge approximately 1.5 hours, including border crossings; transfer done in 4x4 vehicle and then motorboat. Getting on/off safari vehicle and small boat.
Breakfast:

Morning:
We will have time to pack our bags before checking out and transferring the short distance to the Hwange National Park airport, where we will board a private charter flight back to Victoria Falls. Upon arrival in Victoria Falls, we will be transferred by minibus to the Kazungula border to clear Botswana entry formalities, then board open-air 4x4 vehicles which will take us into Chobe National Park for a game drive. Each safari vehicle will have its own local safari expert who provides insight on the flora and fauna seen. Chobe National Park remains one of Africa’s prime game-viewing areas. Here, one finds all of the “Big Five,” except for rhino. This is elephant country, home to the largest population of elephants in the world…many of these great grey giants can be seen at this time of year. (Note: seasonality makes a big difference in how much game you will see. If it’s dry you will see larger herds; if it has recently rained the animals will be more dispersed). The park forms part of Botswana’s northern-most border and is a contrast of desert aridity and flood plains. The Chobe region is best known for its vast magnificent river and floodplains filled with grazing herds of big game. Buffalo, sable, lion, leopard, hippo, hyena, and many species of antelope find safety in this huge national park. Chobe is one of Africa’s most pristine ecosystems and greatest wildlife refuges. Our game drive will take us along the Chobe River and deeper into the park.
Lunch:
Packed lunch provided. Taken at a picnic site inside the park.
Afternoon:
Following lunch, we will re-board our safari vehicles for the drive back through Chobe National Park to the Kasane Immigration Center, where we will clear Botswana exit formalities. Then, we will board our motorboats and ride across the Chobe River to the Namibian Immigration Center, to clear entry formalities. From there, our motorboats will transfer us along the Chobe River to the lodge, which is located on the Namibian side of the river; wildlife will be seen en-route. After settling into our rooms, we will gather on the flood plain in front of the lodge to enjoy our sundowners around a campfire.
Dinner:
Dinners at the lodge will be a 3-course, plated meal. All local brand alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, water and coffee/tea included; premium-brand alcohol available for purchase.
Evening:

The Chobe River is the lifeblood of the area, attracting all of the local fauna to its banks to drink and bathe. As the day gets hotter, hundreds of elephants, large herds of buffalo, giraffe and numerous species of antelope can be found along the river. We will return to the lodge for lunch and the heat of the day at leisure.
Lunch:
Lunches at the lodge will consist of a small buffet with several salad options, main entree, and dessert. All local brand alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, water and coffee/tea included; premium-brand alcohol available for purchase.
Afternoon:
Following afternoon tea, we will embark on another game viewing boat safari on the Chobe River, where we may come face to face with the elephant, buffalo and other wildlife that gather on the banks of the river. Refreshments will be served on the boat as we watch one of Africa's stunning sunsets. We return to the lodge after dusk, with a chance to freshen-up before dinner.

I loved every minute of this trip! To me, what made it so special was having the opportunity to meet new people, fellow travelers as well as all of our African hosts. Our guide, Sam, was so knowledgeable about Zimbabwe (a beautiful country), as well as local wildlife, birds, and local history. His well-paced lectures were interesting and informative. Organized to the minute, Sam
kept us moving seamlessly and at a comfortable pace. Now back home, I can still hear his voice, calling out the names of birds we saw. I can now recognize all the birds we saw in my guidebooks.

This was an excellent trip with a phenomenal guide.
I saw & learned so much!

What a wonderful experience! Sam Mushandu, our program leader, is highly capable - organized, knowledgeable, personable - all the qualities of a great leader. We learned so much about the birds, other wildlife, the people, and the countries we visited. It was one of our top trips ever.

Excellent program! Excellent guide (Sam Mushandu), hundreds of birds including 207 Life Birds, excellent accommodations and food, lots of educational information that filled in the gaps. An immersive experience: the birds and animals, the climate and landscape, the people and way of life, the challenges. I learned so much by being in Africa. I didn't want it to end.

This was a delightful trip! Our leader, Sam, could not have been better - knowledgeable (about not only birds and wildlife but also the history of the region), experienced, enthusiastic, organized, and with a wonderful sense of humor. He made sure we were all well-informed, happy, and safe. The program activities provided little free time, but you could always opt out for a morning or afternoon. Most of the birding was done in safari vehicles or by boat, so while there was little walking, it took some strength and balance to get into and out of those vehicles (but you will have plenty of help if you need it). We saw well over 200 species of birds, as well as elephants, lions, hippos, wildebeest, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, and other species. Highly recommended!

This was an outstanding trip in every way. We signed up mainly for birding, which was great (well over 200 species we'd never seen before), but also enjoyed seeing so much wildlife and learning so much about the history and culture of the five countries. The map shows fairly limited geography (mostly around the Victoria Falls area) but such great diversity of habitats, so we saw and learned much more than if we'd traveled longer distances.

The program provided a wonderful combination of observing 200 plus species of new birds as well as amazing views of large groups of mammals in their native habitats via safari vehicles and pontoon boats.

Excellent trip with a lot of variety. Not too strenuous.

My trip to South Africa Birding Safari was excellent.
Mr. Honest, was a first class Tour Guide. He is professional, knowledgeable, respectful, friendly, intelligent, completely dedicated to being a tour guide. An outstanding guide and person.
He oversaw all the details during our trip.
I also praise the drivers who were in our tour. They knew the way. Were very helpful at all times.
The trip itself was amazing. We saw, and the tour guide Mr Honest, could name all kind of birds. His knowledge was outstanding. Our bird walks were inclusive to pointing out insects, etc. Every day we travelled in Safari cars, boats, which enable the group to notice all kind of birds, whether in their nests, or flying, or on the trees. And mamals such as lions, elephants, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, warhogs, hipos, crocodiles, dogs, baboons, monkeys, and so many other small animals. The Zambezi river is a beautiful river, whichever time you see it, early morning or late afternoon. The different countries and towns and people are a marvel. Friendly. It was great to visit the Livingstone Museum, The Victoria Falls. Each hotel offered wonderful accommodations, great foods, the staff (managers, food preparers, housekeepers, etc.) were professional and friendly. I was extremely pleased with the whole tour. Thank you to the individual professionals who gave special presentations on different subject. It helped to understand all the aspects of the subject matter. Very interesting classes. The trip was absolutely amazing, fun and beautiful. Enjoyed the whole tour. Many thanks to all who made it possible. Will not be forgotten.

An experience of a lifetime. Many opportunities to observe wildlife at close range, great small boat trips on rivers, excellent leadership. Be prepared for difficulty in seeing land birds, but water birds were easily seen. Saw more than 200 species, many of them new to me. Experiencing Africa away from the large cities was an excellent opportunity. Be prepared for very hot days, but the nights cooled down.

We went on the Southern Africa Birding Safari: South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe & Botswana trip. Our bird guide was top notch and helped us to discover almost 300 birds. The accommodations were even better than described. The information presented helped us come away with an entirely different view of the southern African continent - truly a gem!

A fabulous trip with a superlative guide! I couldn't have asked for a better experience, only for a longer one. It was all wonderful! SO MANY BIRDS!!
— Review left December 3, 2022
This program is suitable for a wide range of participant's previous knowledge of birding from the experienced birder to those with an interest in birds but no previous birding. Large African mammal sightings are an unintended addition to the program. Accommodations are very comfortable despite sometimes remote locations.

Great Trip. Not too pushed with multiple night stays at different locations and with surprisingly comfortable lodgings. Enjoyable, largely relaxed birding along with some interesting historical and cultural presentations.

Great trip for birders. the guide is well informed and a great problem solver.

This was an amazing trip! Although billed as a birding safari, I learned so much from our incredible guide, from the local communities we visited, from the beautiful national parks, and from the people who served us along the way. While the trip is rigorous, every moment opens new horizons. Go!! Your heart will be enriched.

My wife and I took this trip in late November/ early December. The rains had fortunately begun a couple of weeks earlier. It did not rain excessively during the trip, just a few showers. Ponchos were provided in the big covered open jeeps used to drive the dirt roads through the national parks etc. Pleasantly surprised by the lack of mosquitos.
The accommodations were quite nice, though WiFi was slow to none at the bush camps. But then you will be pretty busy so not a lot of time to browse. FYI If you begin at the Eastgate Hotel in Johannesburg, there was a surprising amount of birds in the immediate vicinity of the hotel that I did not see anywhere else during the trip.
The focus was birds and there was a whole new world of them The lead guide Sam Mushandu was very good. He ran a tight ship and was very knowledgeable about the ecosystem in general, as well as the birds. Here is a url you can post in your browser window for a Flickr album of some of the birds we saw: https://www.flickr.com/photos/123247913@N05/albums/72157712233999661 The open vehicles provide great views, though if you are a photographer you need to speak up to get closer shots. You cannot get down from the vehicles during the drives and must make do from inside. Thus, there was not a lot of physical activity other that climbing up into and down from the Safari vehicles..
The animals were everywhere and at times quite close. In our case, a lioness walked alongside the safari vehicle as close as six feet away and then crossed over in front of us. Here is a url for a google+ album of some of the animals we saw: https://photos.app.goo.gl/28TV1mmwCwApQQwp8.
The outside activities were more engaging that I expected. The actual trip area outside South Africa is quite compact, so there was not a lot of long road trips to get to the venues.

Just back home from an exciting tour of Southern Africa. The main focus of the trip was Birding, but we saw SO much more! Sam Mushandu was one of the best guides we have ever had on ANY tour! He controlled the group well and added so many more interesting facets. There were just a few non-birders in our group and most of them were happy to look at the birds, too. But when one complained that the birding was too intense, Sam gently corrected them by reminding them that the title of the program was "Birding in South Africa," and that birding would be our main focus. That said, our group worked well together. We saw so many animals, as well as SO MANY Birds!! I highly recommend this tour for any bird watcher!

I found this an amazing trip. It had it all: wildlife; bush tours and cruises with knowledgeable, warm, and helpful guides; wonderful camps; waterfalls; history; local culture; a compatible group of people. Oh, and I added a few birds (lots) to my list.
— Review left April 1, 2019
The best birding trip, well paced, Sam and the other guides very personable, experienced and knowledgeable, a joy for photographers, and accommodations and food well above my expectations. We also saw many animals that satisfied the non-birding partners. The educational programs were interesting and worthwhile.

The program itinerary was just as described in the promotional materials as well as the itinerary we received prior to departure. We saw parts of 4 countries, met many wonderful people at each lodge and saw hundreds of birds....many, many new to us. The visit to Lesedi School was very valuable to us. We are sponsoring 3 children from the same family so they can continue attendance at a high quality rural school,

This is a highly recommended program with memorable accommodations in National Parks and excellent guides resulting in the seeing of large numbers of birds and animals.

Life long dream of visiting Africa and seeing it's people and wildlife fulfilled in a busy two week period! Lots of boat and safari vehicle trips allowed us to see wildlife in safety and comfort.

We just returned from this trip. We highly recommend it, even if you are not an avid birder, which most in our group weren’t. Sam is a fantastic guide, not only as a bird expert, but also for all other wildlife and the history and cultures of the various countries you are traveling in. Plus he has a great personality. We saw approximately 240 species of birds, stayed in fantastic lodges (which provided free laundry!), saw Victoria Falls with good water flow, great sunsets, watched lions, painted dogs, and a Nile crocodile in action, and traveled with a fine group of people. What more could you want? Food was good too.

This program lived up to all of my expectations and more. It was my first predominantly birding program and I will go for more. The birders on this program were prompt, excited, sharing, and all joined in. Once again we had an outstanding guide, who will probably go down as the best guide ever, Sam Mushandu. Sam was our leader, our champion, our educator, our encourager, and overwhelmingly positive in his manner.s and attitude. What a wonderful sense of humor. Thank you, Sam. Thank you all of our fellow travelers, whom I am hopeful to go on another trip. And thank you Road Scholar for another excellent tour.

This was a trip of a lifetime! Great food, excellent housing, extremely competent guides! The birds and mammals were abundant and diverse. The wildlife drives and boat trips made it easy to see and enjoy a lot of what southern Africa has to offer. The people at every stop were friendly and helpful. But the person that made everything work was Sam Mushandu. His leadership, knowledge, passion, and good humor made for a wonderful experience. My wife, Libby, and I will always have great memories of Africa, and it's people and wildlife due largely to Sam and the other people involved with this program! We strongly recommend this program as a can't miss Road Scholar event!

What an excellent experience! Our group consisted of people new to birding, some very experienced birders, and everyone in between. Every day was action-packed, and everyone in our group got along well. Sam, our tour guide, was the absolute best! His enthusiasm, extensive knowledge, and great sense of humor made us look forward to each day’s adventures. To see so many new birds, to experience so much wildlife in their natural habitats, and to interact with local people—this trip exceeded my expectations.
