This display is an annual NYC tradition and is a work of art in itself. It vies with Liverpool’s cathedral for the title of the largest Anglican cathedral and fourth-largest Christian church in the world. The cornerstone was laid in 1892... and it’s not even close to being finished! In addition to its purpose as a house of worship, St. John is an arts, cultural, and civic center and a renowned “feat of human engineering.” One of the Cathedral’s educators will help us understand the history, features, and symbolism of this unique architectural treasure.

We’ll walk across the street to one of the city’s best pizza restaurants for a simple lunch of pizza and salad. Here's a tip: Pizza is finger food for New Yorkers who pick up their slice and fold it to make it easier to eat.

We'll arrive at the library approximately 2:00pm; it will mark the end of the day's programmed activities. The Group Leader will be happy to give advice on how to use this valuable resource. See www.tdf.org for details. The app TODAYTIX is also helpful. One can purchase future performances at a discount. The fee is modest and well below those paid on Ticketmaster or Telecharge. If you're interested in classical performances, the websites for Carnegie Hall, The Met Opera and Lincoln Center are all excellent resources.
Day

Radio City Christmas Spectacular; 5th Ave Holiday Windows
Location:
New York, NY
Meals:
B,L,D
Stay:
New Yorker Hotel
Activity Note
Use of New York City subway; extensive stairs. Walking up to 5 miles; city streets.
Breakfast:
In the Tick Tock Diner.
Morning:
We’ll head to the heart of the city this morning: Midtown and Rockefeller Center, which we'll explore with our Group Leader. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s “city within a city” went up during the worst days of the Great Depression, providing jobs for more than 40,000 people. As Christmas neared during the first year of construction, the workers erected a modest sized tree on the site and a tradition was born. As we'll see, today’s tree is anything but modest! Radio City Music Hall – where this afternoon we'll see the Christmas Spectacular featuring the world famous Rockettes – is located in Rockefeller Center. As a pre-show treat, we'll get a personalized look inside the legendary venue from staff.
Lunch:
At a restaurant in Rockefeller Center.
Afternoon:
Radio City Music Hall is part of Rockefeller Center, so it's just a short stroll to see "The Radio City Christmas Spectacular Starring the Rockettes" from orchestra seats. Originating in St. Louis in 1925, the Rockettes have been performing in Radio City Music Hall since 1933 and have become part of the fabric of New York City’s entertainment tapestry. This amazing stage show showcases the legendary, high-kicking Rockettes with their precision dancing, more than 100 performers, lively music, vibrant holiday scenes, original choreography, multiple costume changes, cutting edge lighting technology, and even Santa Claus himself! After the performance, we'll regroup and return to the hotel for some “down time” before dinner. Alternatively, you may choose to take this opportunity to check off those last few items on your NYC to-do list.
Dinner:
One of New York’s unique holiday traditions is having Chinese food on Christmas Day. We’ll move up the day and enjoy our Chinese feast at a restaurant near the hotel.
Evening:
Nothing says New York at Christmas more than Fifth Avenue. Our Group Leader will take us on a stroll down the famous thoroughfare to marvel at the department store window displays, festive lights and an animated video show. We'll also return briefly to Rockefeller Center to see the famous Tree in all its glory. Returning to the hotel, prepare for check-out and departure following our final session in the morning.

Great experience. Karl was an amazing leader
— Review left December 17, 2023
Be prepared for a great time! Be aware that the walking distance stated is really quite a bit more. My Fitbit documented around 6-7 miles each day.
— Review left December 3, 2023
The content of the program was wonderful, the NY Christmas lights - WOW, the design/decorated store windows - spectacular, the Radio City Music Hall Holiday Spectacular - Rockettes in full array, and lots more. But be aware, the very fast pace and amount of walking and stair climbing, in the cold (the 30+ degree range), is challenging.
— Review left December 2, 2023
This is such a great trip! I highly recommend it to anyone whether new to NYC or an old hand. We did so many great things together, and the group leadership was excellent. Be prepared to walk and climb stairs, but if you're in reasonably good shape, you'll manage fine. Worth every penny!

What a wonderful way to celebrate the Christmas holiday season, but going to NYC and seeing the Tree at Rockefeller Center, the "Christmas Spectacular" with the Rockettes, Bryant Park Holiday Market, and so much more. Be comfortable walking to/from the subways and up/down steps.
— Review left December 11, 2021
Christmas in New York is like nothing else in the world. The energy and excitement, the variety of activities offered will make you feel like a true New Yorker for a few days. It fulfilled a longtime dream for me.
— Review left December 24, 2019
Would give this program a "5" for the itinerary, leaders and convenience of the accommodations, and a "3" for group size. The itinerary really does provide a comprehensive experience of the holidays in New York, with some free time and leaders willing to assist those with individual interests who want to deviate from the itinerary to strike out on their own. However, our group had almost 40 participants, which is a lot for a trip utilizing public transportation and walking tours. The leaders, Christina and Nan, did an excellent job managing the group, but the size of the group did make things somewhat less enjoyable at times, even though everyone in the group was good-natured about the challenges.
— Review left December 14, 2019
Experiencing Christmas in New York is like no other place in North America! I felt the same excitement and wonderment that I had as a child. Highly recommend this program.
— Review left December 14, 2019
Having never been to New York City before, I was very nervous about what to do. Now, I feel confident in riding the subway and navigating Manhattan. Christina, our guide, took the stress off of getting to the venues and how to navigate the New York City crowds. I returned home with a smile on my face.
— Review left December 14, 2019
A fun way to experience NYC at its holiday best - with two or more centuries of making Christmas traditions.
— Review left December 14, 2019
New York is a must see at Christmas! We enjoyed all of the wonderful sights and sounds on our trip. The highlife of course, was the spectacular at Radio City Music Hall!
