Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded to lifelong learners without the financial means to participate in our learning adventures. Each year, thanks to the generosity of our donors, more than 300 Scholarships are awarded.

Questions & Answers

You can apply for a Scholarship toward the cost of any program that takes place in the United States or Canada and costs no more than $2,500.

We accept Scholarship applications from anyone who meets all of the following criteria:

  • At least 50 years of age.
  • Lives in the United States.
  • Meets the eligibility requirements (see the application).
  • Has not taken a Road Scholar program in the last two years.

The Scholarship is applied toward the cost of the program you selected in your application. The amount of the Scholarship will be between $200 and $2,000, determined by your household income. You pay the balance of the program cost after the Scholarship has been applied. At minimum, you pay a $100 deposit, no matter the program cost and amount awarded.

To make sure your application is reviewed, please ensure it is complete. Your application must include the program number and date of a specific United States or Canada program that costs $2,500 or less. If you are awarded a Scholarship, you must apply it toward the program and date specified in your application. You cannot reserve it for a program to be selected in the future.

We know that in rare instances a Scholarship recipient may have to adjust their travel plans. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Remember: Your program deposit is non-refundable and is used to cover our costs if you have to cancel your program or transfer to another.
  • If you cancel your enrollment in the program, the Scholarship becomes void.
  • If Road Scholar cancels your program, the Scholarship can be transferred to another program without fees.
  • If after enrollment you decide to transfer to another eligible program, the Scholarship may be transferred along with the enrollment.
  • Your Scholarship can’t be transferred to another person.

The Scholarship is applied to the cost of the program only. It does not cover the cost of transportation to and from the program and any additional material costs or expenses.

When you get back from your adventure, we ask that you do a few things for us, such as complete an evaluation after your program, write a thank-you letter to the donor(s) who funded your Scholarship, post an online review (we can help you with this if you need), and allow us to use your personal statement and thank-you letter when we report to donors and tell others about our Scholarships.

ADVENTURES ONLINE SCHOLARSHIPS:

HOW IT WORKS

If travelling is not possible for you right now — but you’re still ready to learn — you may be interested in our Adventures Online programming. Adventures Online programs offer the instruction and camaraderie of other Road Scholar programs, but present them in a shortened, online experience that allows you to learn from the comfort of your own home. All you need is a computer and a steady internet connection.

Because Adventures Online programs are typically less expensive, they may also be a good alternative to on-site learning adventures.

All Adventures Online Scholarship applicants should submit an application here. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so you can apply any time!

If your application is approved, we will contact you with available programs and dates to choose from.

To secure a spot, recipients will need to make a $50 deposit. The award will cover the balance cost of the program.

Enjoy a week of Road Scholar learning, all from the comfort of your home!

Questions? Send us an email at registration@roadscholar.org, or call us toll free at (800) 454-5768, Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
