Then listen to Coach as he delves into the Ehics in BaseballLunch: Lunch on campusAfternoon: Depart for a field trip to the St. Petersburg Museum of History. Pinellas County's oldest museum was founded in 1920 as the St. Petersburg Memorial Historical Society. Through the determination and effort of Mary Wheeler Eaton and others, the Society began collecting artifacts, natural history specimens, archival documents, photographs, papers, and "boxes of unknown treasures that were just dropped on our doorstep during the night." In 1922, the Society became incorporated and the city of St. Petersburg provided the use of an old aquarium building (located on the same site as today's Museum) for the public display of the Museum's collections.
While at the museum, you will learn about the History of Spring Training from Bob Guckenberger.
When BOB GUCKENBERGER was growing up in New York City, his father converted a checkers board to a baseball field with bases, home plate etc. He labeled all the Yankees players on the checkers pieces and as they listened to the game together, Bob would move the pieces around the bases or into the field in the visitors half of the inning. As he grew older, a transistor radio (remember those?) would be smuggled under his pillow for games that lasted past bedtime.
The passion never waned. Bob received a Masters Degree in Business and worked for advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather in New York writing Mercedes-Benz ads and commercials. Another of his passions is automobiles. When the 3 hour-a-day commute became unbearable, Bob set out for his dream location, Florida. He became Creative Director for the largest agency in the state and eventually owned his own advertising agency.
Bob has been on the Board of the St. Petersburg Museum of History for over 25 years and has had a hand in 3 baseball exhibits. He worked closely with the city to bring a major league team here, including creating a campaign that sold 22,697 season ticket reservations. You could easily say baseball is his passion. Fans can view an array of different artifacts and pictures of the "Greatest hitter that ever lived." These memorable displays range from Ted Williams' days in the military through his professional playing career.
This museum is dedicated to some of the greatest players to ever "lace 'em up," And even the die-hard Yankees fans will have plenty to gobble up their attention as they are drawn from one case to the next.
There is an M & M tribute wall dedicated to Yankee greats Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. But what would a Hitters Hall of Fame be without the likes of Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, Don Mattingly, Wade Boggs, and George Brett? All have their own displays. See the famous Babe Ruth baseball signed for Ted Williams. The recently recovered ball was stolen 27 years ago and will be on display for the first time ever, thanks to Ted's daughter Claudia, who has decided to put the ball on permanent display at the museum.Lunch: At the hotel The program concludes with lunch today.
