Join historian Oscar Oviedo Velasco for an engaging presentation that will take you above the coastal plains of southern Peru to unveil the enigmatic Nasca Lines, also known as the "Nazca Lines", a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These ancient and immense geoglyphs, etched into the desert, have intrigued scholars for centuries with their mysterious figures of animals, plants, and geometric shapes. Oscar will share the history, theories, and latest research surrounding these archaeological wonders, offering insights into their creation and purpose. Discover what these lines, visible fully only from the air, reveal about the innovative Nasca civilization and their understanding of art, astronomy and spirituality.

General Notes

Your online lecture will take place live over the course of 1-2 hours. All times are listed in the EASTERN time zone. If you live in a different time zone, please adjust your schedule accordingly. This live online experience uses Zoom Webinar, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. You will receive a confirmation email when you enroll, and a reminder email one week and one day before, as well as the morning of the event with a link and instructions on how to tune in. You will not be pictured on screen during the lecture, but you will have the opportunity to ask the instructor live questions using the Q&A box. Unless otherwise noted, all those who enroll in this program receive access to the live event as well as a recording of the lecture that you can watch any time within the two weeks following the live event.

Oscar Oviedo Velasco has over 15 years of experience as a local expert and Group Leader. He specializes in archeology, history, and art of Peru, and has conducted studies on pre-Hispanic textile and pottery techniques and Viceregal history of Lima. Oscar has a degree in museology and has participated in installations for the Amano Museum of Pre-Columbian Textiles. Oscar has participated in excavation projects related to pre-Inca civilizations and battlefields in Lima. Oscar is currently studying conservation and restoration of antiques at San Marcos University.
